Regardless of your own opinion on him, the majority of audience reactions for the "babysitting kid" were very positive, and viewers would be more likely to be upset/negative about the film if he would've been killed.
Well, in the book he actually does go to a gay bar. Guess they might be upset that part of the gayness was missing in the film?
