Considering how they all look like TV movies, this was the best strategy for their release. I very much doubt the trilogy would have been as well-received if it had a traditional release in movie theaters.
I too was disappointed, considering the glowing reviews. The ending is clearly the best thing about it, but even there, for it to be as heart-wrenching as they clearly intended it to be, the movie needed to present us with a tangible feeling of love and affection among the three family members, but I never really got that all throughout the movie. I just kept thinking that there's something off between Kay and her mom, and I was waiting for it to be addressed, which never happened.
I also had another major problem with the movie; in movies which make great use of metaphors or are based around them, you have this surface level story that the characters experience which is their world and everything about it makes sense. However, you have to look a bit deeper to pick up on the things which are being depicted beneath the surface; the metaphors. In this movie, though, although it works completely fine on the metaphorical level, it is a failure and makes pretty much no sense on the surface level. And in addition to that, the surface level events are not much interesting or engaging either. At least that's how it felt to me.
Thank you for the thorough reply. I had, indeed, forgotten about that bit with the drunk guy. You are right; it actually was heavy foreshadowing, now that I think about it. As for number two, I did get that weird vibe from that scene, but maybe because I didn't have that "rampage" moment in my mind, I didn't consider his intention to be hostile. But I do think that the stone could have made sense as a gift, since it was supposed to bring wealth to whoever owned it.

Oh, I didn't think for a moment that he was trying to kill them. Not sure how I feel about this. I just thought he was taking the stone to them as a peace offering. I mean, why would he choose such an inconvenient murder weapon? The stone makes perfect sense as a gift, but very little as a murder weapon. Why would he go through all that trouble?

Appreciate it. Gotta admit, there was no way I could figure out the first one, even though now it seems really straightforward. I hope it's just got to do with English not being my native language. :)
I think they did. What was the point of that scene anyway? Just to show how evil they were? I rolled my eyes.
