They don't have a story arc planned out, they just make shit up as they go. It also happens when there's constant turnovers behind the cameras and in the writing room. I thought the modern Planet of The Apes Trilogy was pretty solid all the way through. The V/H/S franchise is MOSTLY solid too. So it's not impossible.

Totally agree with everything here! I'd also add Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, they was about to be the gangsta rap equivalent of Boyz II Men huge. But internal conflicts, and record disputes just kinda derailed them. Didn't help that rap music changed for the worse in the early 00's, killing their musical ecosystem so to speak.
