Ginger does have a "type," like Jasmine pointed out, because Chili and Augie could have been brothers from another mother. They were both just regular Joes. Hardworking men who, IMO, were pretty stand up guys for the most part. Jasmine repeatedly insulted him and then, yes, encouraged Ginger to cheat and dump him. MOST men would have had very strong reactions to this type of degredation. To say he is a "potential abuser" because he lost control for a few seconds is ridiculous. He pulled the phone out of the wall, he didn't punch Ginger in the face !! (And he could have.)
Until the end, that is. When she came back to Ginger's apartment after seeing Danny, she no longer had the purse, or her expensive (probably Chanel) sweater. They were gone. She either dropped them or left them somewhere, which to me signified her giving up. All that time she kept holding onto those "symbols" of wealth, but finally, she was defeated and let them go.
I think you're exactly right. Jasmine was representative of those people who we see on the streets, trapped in a world of their own, often talking to themselves. Just like Jasmine, all these people had lives, once. Traumatic events and series of unfortunate circumstances led them to a life of homelessness and battle with unmedicated mental illness. They were mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters of someone, and yet here they are, lost on the streets, many by choice.
