Re: #2, the lack of an "off switch" I have experienced that with more than a few people in the NYC improv scene. I might be wrong but I was under the impression that as the movie went on, some of the bits are supposed to be bad. After Jack lands the big job, their sharpness noticeably drops and fewer of the bits land. Sam especially. (Though she's still the best of the group) Think it's supposed to be kind of ambiguous, to be misinterpreted by her. I agree with your read, but I think the point was it was a line that was supposed to be misread, to show how socially awkward he really was. We all have those stock bits we fall back on when we're nervous.
