Yes, there are contrived plot devices which are a platform for the themes and philosophies being presented. The plot takes a back seat. There is nothing wrong with this. This is not uncommon in certain films. Take Melancholia as a classic example. Does that film use a "contrived plot device"? Is it scientifically accurate that characters are still on the planet as another is in the midst of colliding with Earth, or would the characters have died long before the other planet collided due to forces exerted prior to the collision? It would not work without the internal dialogue. The episodes with the crew and the episode on the failed rescue mission would not tie in at all without the internal dialogue narrating emotional state. I did was not at all distracted by the internal dialogue. The camera focuses on Roy so much and with so many closeups that it might as well be a first person narrative from his POV. It IS a first person narrative. As far as I recall there isn't a single scene in the movie in which Roy is not present. How much of an idiot are you? Do you even have ears with which to listen to dialogue? He did not intend to kill anyone on the ship you fucking moron. He even mentioned that he meant no harm when boarding the ship. He also mentioned that the crew would not be successful without him because he knew from prior events that the pilot was incompetent. Brad Pitt sent a message right after killing, expressing the tragedy that had transpired. Furthermore, he went on the successfully carry out the mission and saving humanity from extinction. Furthermore still, the men on board knew they were going on a suicide mission because there wasn't enough resources for a return trip for so many people. It is a requirement for the plot that it take place near Uranus. It would not have worked if it took place in the aforementioned locations. The reason *Uranus is important is because it is the farthest planet in our solar system. Humans cannot conceivably go farther in pursuit of God. The distance is simply too great. A rational person would break at the tragedy of pioneering travels throughout the entire solar system and ultimately being unsuccessful in his mission. A rational person would admit that there is no God and we are alone and we are our own creators because we give birth to children. But, father is too stubborn or too guilty (absence from his creation's life) to admit defeat. You didn't understand. *EDIT: Meant Neptune. The plot is a vehicle for the underlying philosophy, which you didn't understand. Btw, if you were paying attention, you would realize that the anti-matter explosions were somehow related to the old ships broken down engine. But again, it doesn't matter. It not mattering is not okay, according to you. That is fine, just watch Avatar or Aliens (2), those are films that are more your speed. I'm glad you understand your position relative to me. Perhaps I gave you less credit than you deserve. You may be low IQ and unwashed and degenerate, but atleast you are self aware. I prefer mine. The dirty degenerate low IQ unwashed masses score. Dumb Hispanic attempts and fails to speak English properly and has black music blaring in the background. Probably lives in Florida or New Jersey. "Do you think this movie will inspire psychos? Mass shootings?" I hope so. why is human survival the axiomatic good? Because all the DNA that did not predispose the harboring of such an axiom went extinct. We are slaves to DNA and the futile cycle of death and rebirth. Human extinction is the path to emancipation, it is the path to Nirvana. Wrong. there are 0 good Star Wars movies. Star Wars movies have the intellectual depth of a Nickelodean sitcom. The lore and fiction can be deep to be sure, but the movies are not that. You only view the original trilogy with reverence because you are wearing nostalgia goggles. He's just not a very compelling character. He always feels forced no matter what. His motivations are shallow. Just boring revenge. It's sad that they are trying to force him. Phantom Thread 3rd, wtf? There Will be Blood - 10/10 The Master - 9.5/10 Boogie Nights -7.5/10 Phantom Thread Magnolia Punch Drunk Love Inherent Vice I've forgotten or haven't seen Hard Eight. For me There will be blood and The Master are in a separate category. Other than those, PTK films are just okay. Xenomorph. Alien was not a big budget blockbuster. James Cameron is the one who created the big budget crutch to the series by creating Aliens. But, this was not the fault of the creators of Alien. The money grubbing unintelligent producers of Alien decided to make it into a big budget franchise. While typically I would say that big budget doesn't matter, in the case of Prometheus and Covenant, the big budget reputation of the franchise was definitely a crutch because it set up certain expectations from the audience. These expectations would not exist if Aliens and the films after that did not exist. I personally don't consider those films to be cannon, they diverge entirely from the themes of Alien. The themes of Alien don't return until Prometheus and Covenant. Prometheus and Covenant and Alien are by design really difficult to understand, because the themes are not very politically correct or easy for humans to bear. The themes have to be hidden. They require some audience knowledge about nihilist philosophy. The biggest clue is "The Perfect Organism" lecture by Ash in Alien. I have seen Upgrade. IMO it's not on the same level as I AM MOTHER and Alien/Covenant/Prometheus. I haven't seen Rememory ARQ and Infinity Chamber. Read the first 3 paragraphs and I'm like, wtf, you know this fucking movie is MOTHER FUCKING FICTION right!? Naria is bunk because Lions can't possibly talk. Harry Potter is bunk because there are no wizards who can fly on broomsticks! Lord of the Rings is bunk because lol elves and orcs wtf, do these people even know science! Only religious zealots made these fucking movies. Not going to read further. Thanks. I agree with all of the above.
