About "quitting while on top", well to me it's just stupid BECAUSE previously the show writer went on record to say that he has enough material for 6-8 seasons planned out. And let's be honest now, nowadays a season is 11-13 episodes, not 20-24 episodes like in the good old days. So it's even less work to fill up a season, but he is just not up to the job anymore it seems.
