Good thing the trailer pretty much gave that away anyway.
I really didn't find it necessary. First off, the fact there were 2 pods gave off 'that' vibe. And then they tried to play the shell game.
In my opinion, it's just a movie, so you can make a happy ending and everyone can imagine for themselves what a sad ending would be. Making a sad ending is simply unnecessary. It's just a movie and we all know they can do whatever they want.
You can't compare this to The Sixth Sense because that twist was a real twist and not just a shell game.
Sure, there are films that don't end happy. I'm not really sure Platoon is a good example. It simply ended as it started. A sad ending would have been if Sheen had died. "Seven" ends with the villain dead. Lots of crime movies include good people dying. Most do. And some movies are written to have sad endings; Terms is one, Love Story, One Flew Over... but all those films have a different purpose, far from a science fiction film. A film like Love Story, Steel Magnolias, Terms; they all tug at your heart and probably make most cry.
In "Life" you could have seen the twist coming a lot more than a mile away. A twist is something sudden and totally unexpected. Sixth Sense, Saw, Identity; those were awesome twists that came in an instant and no one saw coming.
In "Life" it was nothing more than a choice.
The DVD will probably come with an alternate ending. Twist movies don't have alternate endings.
