I think Woody has many influences and although Chekhov may be one of them let's not forget; Fellini, Bergman, Tennessee Williams, Groucho Marx, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Bob Hope, Shakespeare...
Yeah that is a wonderful scene! I saw 'Hannah' in the movies when I was like 21 and what really left an impression on me was how he was able to bring so many deeply human characters together in one film that we cared about.
I agree on some level it does seem to happen kind of abruptly. But if think of it as a musical and not a realistic film it makes more sense.
