I think it is important to highlight the work of female directors, writers, producers etc. but making their work synonymous with feminism is nonsense. That would be like labelling all female philosophers feminist philosophers. That simply isn't the case. The people behind the scenes definitely matter. There are plenty of well-known directors who's name alone can sell a film. Simply put I think this is a good initiative, just not executed in the right way. Probably for the same reason people in the west continue to torture, kill and eat cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and over livestock. But I guess that doesn't make them uncivilized does it? Stop being a hypocrite and stop being a racist. Considering that they wheel him out in a stretcher in the news report at the end of the film I find it hard to believe that he managed to discard of three bodies before the Police arrived. Agreed about Don't Breathe. Though I felt like the film was flawed before that in that they gave us a group of protagonists that it was impossible to root for and a sympathetic antagonist. It almost felt like, to me, that they introduced the impregnation subplot as a way of making the Blind Man seem evil, compared to the kids. Definitely a horror film, no doubt about it. People who say this film isn't a horror film have probably never watched any of the classics like The Shining or Repulsion. They probably just want wall-to-wall gore and jump scares. If that's the case, there are plenty of horror films like that out there. I don't enjoy them, but I don't deny that they're horror films. I watched The Babadook last night and while discussing it online afterwards I was surprised by the sharp divide between people who loved it and people who hated it. I heard that it was marketed as a monster movie so I suspect a lot of the people who disliked it didn't go in to it expecting a psychological horror. I knew what it was about, I specifically watched it because I knew it was a psychological horror, and I loved it. There seems to be a real backlash against these sort of horror films amongst fans. I'm lumping together films like The Babadook, The Witch, It Follows etc. here. Lots of people seem to find them "boring", "slow" or "not scary" which I think it fair enough. I think a lot of these people probably expect to see a lot more gore and jump scares in horror films these days and are disappointed when they get two hours of tension building instead. My partner is one of those people. She didn't enjoy The Witch. She asked me to turn off It Follows half way through. But she loves shlocky horror films like Braindead and Street Trash. It's just that different horror fans have different tastes, I guess. Yoda. Somebody on Reddit made a point that pretty much all of the main Jedi in Episode VII onwards can trace their training back to Yoda. Yoda trained Count Dooku who trained Qui Gon who trained Obi Wan who trained Luke who will go on to train Rey. Apart from Stranger Things I haven't watched any horror television. I don't really have the time to watch whole series anymore so I'm very specific about which shows I will watch. That said I'm doubtful whether these shows can match the calibre of recent horror films such as The Babadook, The Witch, Green Room, It Follows etc. I'd like to be proven wrong though. I'm looking forward to Raw, The Belko Experiment, Alien: Covenant, Get Out (hasn't been released in UK yet), It Comes At Night and It. Does Kong: Skull Island count? If so, Kong: Skull Island as well. There's still a couple of 2017 releases that I haven't seen yet such as XX and Prevenge. According to Letterboxd I've watched 38 horror films so far this year. Out of those my top five would have to be (in no particular order): The Babadook Psycho It Follows The Witch Suspiria Watched so many other good horror films this year including Under the Shadow, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, My Bloody Valentine, City of the Living Dead, [REC], Hush, Godzilla (1954) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Pretty hard to choose just five. View all replies >
