I agree, not really a happy ending, but quite optimistic. The mother gets off the bus in a panic, leaving the husband and kids behind - basically doing what the husband did during the avalanche, and what she said she'd never do. Husband feels vindicated, everything's back to a level playing field so to speak. Not quite sure about him "rescuing" her during the ski run. As you say, she shows she didn't need rescuing, so perhaps they agreed to do that for the benefit of the kids? Some incredible images, but a bit too much Ryan Gosling with that blank emotionless expression... What about it bugged you? Given that Contact was a similar film in many ways, I'd have to say Jodie Foster....
