Just saw this film, I thought it was very well done. The ending left so many questions. My first impression was

I recently saw "Dog Day Afternoon" was listed as an "action" film. Show me a director the caliber of Sidney Lumet and an actor equal to Al Pacino in an action film and I might be interested.

Yeah the European white man did a lot to protect the buffalo. That is the most outrageous statement one could possibly make.
Being that "He wasn't from there" finally made him leave. The difference between the locals and himself was vividly represented in the scene where the reported is beaten. There was no showing of the resolution between Mickey and his wife. We can only assume that an already broken relationship ended. He had also lost his meat truck and probably any means of an income.
