Generally speaking, I think the overall acting quality on the show ranges from the pleasently competent to the excellent, but I personally wouldn't place Lincoln's amongst the latter category. Different stropes for different folks. I've been way more impressed with Karl Makinen's nuanced and moving work in the few episodes he's been in than with all of Lincoln's overacting -my subjective perception- during the whole series.
But generally speaking, the ensemble cast works indeed. If it didn't, the series would be cancelled by now.

I did, and can't understand the low notes. It's a very competently written and acted character piece that deserves better, in my humble opinion. Also, there's some interesting and relevant themes involved there about father-son relationships, violent rites of passage and male bonding and confidence building through an ultimately destructive -albeit socially tolerated, or even applauded- activity. Also, the ending was, for me, one of the best I've seen in years in a movie of this subgenre, specially compared to recent similar offerings like The Monster, Always Shine or Arbor Demon, showing that you can have an ending that leaves some room for interpretation and discussion and be at the same time coherent, slightly surprising and carry a punch, as good finales should.
I can only imagine that the abysmal ratings are due to the unfortunate decision of marketing the film as something it isn't. Those entering it expecting to find a typical creature feature -nothing wrong about it, I myself love creature features to death- are in for a disappointment, as this is actually a character study with very little action, all concentrated in the end of the last act and surrounded by a certain surreal quality that, I suspect, was intended to accentuate the metaphorical nature of the events portrayed. In short, sure it wasn't a masterpiece but I found it to be an honest little tale worth telling and listening to -or watching, in this instance-, assuming that you're the target audience for it.
I do care about a few -very few- of the characters in this, actually, but it's because of the quality of the work of the actors portraying 'em. Otherwise, I'd leave the tank before it reaches the precipice and drags me along with the nazi commander.

The man had more guts in his pinky than that stupid stick-waving kung-fu wannabe pruneface has shown in the whole series, in my humble opinion. Effing self-righteus idiot of a character. I can't stand his pathetic messiah complex and the way it's handled; it suited John Carroll Lynch's character and the actor carried it admirably, but in Morgan it's irksome and grating.

Season 7 has been perfect, except for one thing: season 7.

I hear ya. Those zombie skulls are made of jell-o. Not only that, but their sometimes rotting/sometimes desiccated carcasses keep sprouting bigger sprays of fresh, fluid blood than a piglet in a blender would, despite their circulatory system being more inactive than the audience''s enthusiasm by now.
My wife and I, we only keep coming back to this trainwreck to enjoy JDM hamming up his performance and planting his tongue in everyone's cheek's more firmly with each scene he chews whenever the showrunners allow him to show up -not enough, by the way. it's Naked Gun-type fun for us by now, to be honest. We don't watch The Walking Dead anymore, we watch "The JDM Show" or "Leave it to Negan", as those are just a couple of the alternatives we use to refer to this dumbfest nowadays.
