It’s pretty good. The multiple storylines are a bit confusing, but it all ties up at the end. There was some backlash against it for winning the Oscar rather than Brokeback Mountain, so I think a lot of bad audience reviews come from that. At the time, it was well reviewed and did well at the boxoffice.
I watched again recently and the film has more to say about police and race relations today than 14 years ago. It doesn’t take any sides. No character is portrayed as either all good or all bad. Rather, it depicts that our anger, fear, and resentment can be overcome.
Very tragic in spots; uplifting in others.
