Very entertaining movie, but gets very heavy handed and too obvious at times

While I very much enjoyed the film, it did have some integral problems.

1) At points in the film when a historical or real person is brought up the movie cuts to a picture of them and gives us history about them. I thought this was unnecessary, if the audience is concerned or interested they can look them up themselves, you don't need to stop the movie in its tracks to educated us about them.

2) I know Spike Lee hates Trump and so do many others, but some of the insults are too obvious. One of the main ones is callings him somethings along the lines of "skull and bones" and then when showing a news-clip of him it actually puts that as his name instead of Donald Trump. Also towards the conclusion of the film one of the antagonist takes one of the character's hats that reads "Make America great again" and puts it on while he is continuing his assault on the main characters. Did you really need to make it that blatant?

reply

I agree with you and I am no fan of Trump whatsoever.

I felt like "Black Kkklansman" had the same issues

It's kind of like preaching to the choir at this point which I suppose is a good thing that such a large choir dislikes #45.

About 1), I don't think anyone will remember those people 2 hours later. So your theory that people can just go search themselves afterwards is not valid. I thought it was ok.

About 2), the Trump was obvious, but the main character was a Trump fan. I don't think it was too "blatant" or obnoxious. It was just a simple and direct note.

reply

1) I did and several others I have talked to remembered them. How does that discredit my theory from being valid? Fine, if you thought it was okay, but it did seem like Lee was trying to educate that you need to know who these people are and that I am going to stop the film, show a picture of them and tell you why they are important.

reply

He didn't stop the film. They were having a dialogue and mentioned these people.
They showed a picture of those people, and the picture was up for like 2 seconds. You may not like the artistic approach, but it's hardly something "distracting" from the movie.

In addition, I believe you and your friends went to search about all the real people mentioned in the movie, but I am sure at least 80% of the people that watched the movie didn't go and search about those people afterwards.

Fair enough. I did like the movie. By and large the movie works, but I thought that some approaches could have been accomplished better if done differently.
