Virtue signaling

A nod to the homeless as an indulgence. All while the shit on the streets drives everyone from California.

reply

I would have rather had it be a straight documentary, told by the actual nomads.

reply

I enjoyed the movie but you have a point Iconoclast

A doc about these modern nomads would be very interesting

reply

Yeah, the real people who live in RVs are a lot more varied and interesting.

reply

You can find lots of mini-docs on modern nomads, or RVers as they are called, on YouTube. I watched some and was sort of fascinated for a while. But my interest waned when one rough-and-ready character in a makeshift RV talked using a bucket for a toilet.

reply

That's the only turn off to the Road Lifestyle...flushing toilets and hot showers seem a rarity and that's sort of a deal breaker

TRUCK STOP SHOWERS FOR NON-TRUCKERS

reply

Well that could be useful info

reply

I used to watch some on Youtube also, but not so many anymore. I still watch Angela M and sometimes Panda Monium. It's odd they never say where they are getting their money from when all they're doing is constant 'camping or glamping.' I can't imagine they make enough from their Youtube channel to support their lifestyle.

reply

Well, there was a proper documentary called "Camperforce" made based on the book and the Swankie and Bob Wells characters in the film are real nomads.

As for the title of the thread, these days "virtue signaling" pretty much means "being a decent human being" IME.

reply

The people who use "virtue signaling" spend their time crying about Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head.

reply

No, virtue signaling means pretending you're a decent human being by acting morally superior to those around you all the while being a literal shitbag

reply

So you?

reply

Nah I don't pretend, I know I'm an asshole

reply

I agree, that would have more political impact, but Nomadland was a decent movie.

reply

I think the movie is the opposite of virtue signalling. It's showing white people struggling.

reply

> the shit on the streets drives everyone from California.

Whatever works! ;-)

reply

I think its funny this won best picture and the Academy drove homeless people out of Union Station all week to set up for the Oscars

Peak virtue signaling

six attempts to define "Virtue Signalling" on this thread so far , all twisted to put the posters view across , ironicly.

wikipedia has it as :
Virtue signalling is a pejorative neologism for the expression of a disingenuous moral viewpoint with the intent of communicating good character

Whish seems a lot more accurate to me

reply

So I wasn't far off, good to know

reply

Except that ironically enough it is Republicans/Conservatives that are disingenuous and always complaining if they have to respect other people's rights.
