Kowalski's right though. The guy is clearly saying 'If you're a homophobic weirdo, you're lost to my marketing attempts -- nothing I can say will make you ever see my movie. Everybody else, gay or straight? Come along. Have yourself a blast.'

Which seems fair enough, doesn't it?

Not remotely the same thing as 'If you don't want to see this movie you're a homophobe.' He's just trying to sell it to a wider audience than have so far shown up.

I still think it's the kind of movie most people -- whatever their sexuality -- will choose to watch on streaming if they're going to watch it at all. But that's by the bye.

It is just the usual attempt to try to shame people into watching the film. Happened with Charlies Angels and recently with King Woman (implying you are racist if you don't watch it). Hollywood has been using this tactic for years now. Look at Rings of Power where criticism about the show is attributed to racism/sexism.

That video rather makes Kowalski's and my point though, doesn't it? That's a video of a man promoting his film to anyone who isn't a homophobe. That's not a video of a man saying anyone who doesn't want to watch his movie is a homophobe.

I don't think it's a particularly good marketing strategy to ask people to come and support a film on that basis. I can't imagine anyone wanting to see a film to make a point against other people who wouldn't want to see it. That's certainly not how I choose my entertainment.

And it's a strategy that doesn't appear to have worked out. But attempting to rally your potential audience is not the same thing as accusing anyone who doesn't want to see your film of being a homophobe.

The corollary of this is essentially that to not go and see the movie means you are a homophobe. It is manipulation and trying to shame people into watching and supporting his film. Note how in the video above there is nothing about go watch the movie because it is fun and well made, you should watch it for political and ideological reasons.

I just don't agree with you. I'm not going to agree with you. I don't think that's what he said or implied.

'Everyone who ISN'T a homophobic weirdo should go see Bros tonight' is his attempt to rally people who aren't homophobic weirdos to watch his film. Nowhere in there is any suggestion that anyone who fails to answer the call is a homophobe. He'd just really, really like you to go and support his movie if you're not a homophobic weirdo. Which is fair.

It's not going to work. But it's fair.

Note how in the video above there is nothing about go watch the movie because it is fun and well made, you should watch it for political reasons.

On this, however, we agree. Which is why I think it's a bad marketing strategy. No-one goes to see a film to make a point.
