It's OK, but nothing special

I can see how opinions on this movie are polarised across feminist/anti-feminist lines, but I was really expecting more judging from some of the positive reviews that I have read, ie something along the lines of "Gone Girl", but this movie feels like it was "made for TV".

The plot is predictable and the acting is average at best (the acting at the end in bedroom scene was embarrassingly bad).

reply

I totally disagree. I thought it was pretty unpredictable, especially certain parts, and the acting was really good. I think this is Carey Mulligan's best performance and she will likely get an Oscar nomination.

reply

yeah she was good, but the rest of the cast was TV level acting. Also you honestly couldn't predict her bf?.
Must admit I didn't predict the non hollywood ending so I give the writers that.
Want to watch a really good film that is kinda similar?, watch the Dutch film 'Spoorloos' (The Vanishing). Kubrick said it was one of the best films that he has ever seen, just don't read any reviews on the film on account of spoilers. I have copy/pasted the top comment on imdb and it is very accurate.

"STOP!!!!

Observe these 3 rules if you plan on seeing this film:

Rule #1, AVOID the 1993 remake "The Vanishing" or if you absolutely need to see it, watch the original first.

Rule #2, If you're of a sensitive nature and easily depressed, don't watch this.

Rule #3, do NOT read any other comments on this film until you have seen it. This is a love it or hate it type of movie and looking for opinions to decide if you want to see this WILL ruin it for you. See it first, form your own opinion, then check back here. Trust me on this, you'll thank me afterwards."

reply

I've seen both versions of The Vanishing. Promising Young Woman is a better film, in my opinion.

reply

Spoorloos is not very similar to this...

Well I cant! (but i havent seen it)
As i understand it its "girl is wronged , girl take revenge"

What the hell is the problem?
If it were a man dong that - like John wick , say , no one gets upset.

You've seen it , perhaps you can help.
Why are people complaining about "Feminism" ?

reply

I am not complaining, just commenting on the polarised comments that I have read. eg 'More divisive woke garbage.', 'Disgusting Anti-Male Propaganda' vs 'Ignore the misogynistic trolls here, this is an amazing film, the critics and audiences agree.'.
So if I didn't think the movie was that good does that make me a misogynist? (maybe I shouldnt have said feminist, but these comments are typical 3rd wave feminists).
Yes Mulligan was good, but the other performances were so-so. Like I said, that last scene with the groom in the bedroom when his friend walks in had cringingly bad acting.

reply

"So if I didn't think the movie was that good does that make me a misogynist?"

no not at all , I was talking about the authors of the vitroilic comments we've both spotted.
I was just wondering if you'd spotted anything in it that made it an overtly man hating feminist movie, (as i havent seen it)
like the main character saying ....
(im struggling to think of an example because a women whos been raped has every right to be mad as hell)

OR...
the usual crowd are spouting their usual hate speech "More divisive woke garbage" , purely because "woman"

reply

oh no... this is about a women. Therefore, good OR bad, we must lift it up like better than sliced bread. For all women must now (metoo) rise and everything they do is BETTER, even if it is not, and if you don't support that 1000% you are a MANSPLAINING, hating, toxic masculine (which is who women still love to F*** and always will!!) mysogynistic, a hole.

Oh, and welcome to 2021! :)
