Not as cool as I would like

I suppose they don't know what they want it to be. It's constantly flip flopping between dark and cheesy. The 90s Mortal Kombat movie worked because they chose one... being cheesy. But it was fun. It was good.

This time, they tried too hard on making it darker and deep only to turn 180 degrees into cheese again. For Rayden's sake! Make up your mind! Do you want it to be serious or not? If not then why bother? I would just rewatch the live action movie which is 100x more awesome and fun. And I get to see badass Christopher Lambert and the always fine Talisa Soto.

What a missed opportunity! It was a chance to flex the lore of Mortal Kombat using a different approach. Something never been done before, akin to the Tim Burton's Batman moment to break free from Adam West's. A new beginning. It would be so cool to see! But they chickened out and end up with basically an inferior remix of the 1995 movie. Seems like they simply could not move on.

Also, while the animation is actually a little bit better than usual WB productions, the overwhelming use of "X-Ray shots" were annoying. There are just too many of them. We get it, bones are shattering, skulls are being crushed. Shoving the audience those for like a thousand times wouldn't make it more hardcore or anything. It becomes a nuissance.

I'm terribly worried about their 2021 Mortal Kombat live-action plan. If this is how they would do it... insta-flop.

I think they went to mimic the success of the past few games as a direction with this feature. The games just as you say have elements of dark or perhaps seriousness but in the next scene you have Johnny Cage cracking jokes. This may be for the best though because these are the complaints I hear with some movies more present. Example Batman - people complain it's TOO dark and brooding, and the mid-90's features were TOO cheesy. It may be hard to find that balance.

If they do come out with rebooted feature I would expect it to be a mixture dark, cheesy, funny, serious ridiculousness. It's hard not to with such a random assortment of fighters and other creatures.
