How/why did his mom have powers?

I didn't get that. The other residents of her village didn't appear to be super human. But she could take out his dad with the Ten Rings?

reply

She had a Vagina.

reply

Well, women can make men do some crazy things thanks to that power.

reply

Lol...

reply

I laughed out loud!

reply

...kids..

reply

You weren’t paying attention. Both her and her sister knew a technique to bend air, which allowed them to fight someone like the Mandarin.

reply

Soooooo, two people in the magic village have powers then? Why not everyone?

reply

Because they didn’t learn the technique.

Have you never seen martial arts movies? Or read comics featuring martial artists? It’s a common trope that’s been around for centuries.

reply

From whom?

reply

What do you mean from whom? If you’re asking who started the trope, that’d be some Asian (likely Chinese) storytellers from a long time ago. It ties into a belief in Chi/Ki and how if one were to channel it and train the right way, they can have powers. Marvel comics have used these powers in Shang-Chi and other series.

If you’re asking who trained the women in this movie, it never says and it isn’t important. I mean, who trained the mentor characters in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Who trained Master Roshi in Dragonball?

reply

The presence of others trained in the same technique shows that they had a common master.
If only the 2 sisters are the trained ones then us natural to ask: how did they learn it?
How did they train? It’s important to show that.

Can you imagine karate kid without Myiagy?

reply

Considering Daniel LaRusso was the main character of the Karate Kid, it makes sense to show Miyagi as his mentor. Both of these women were side characters with about ten minutes of combined screentime, so it's not a very good analogy.

In fact, one of these sisters trained Shang-Chi, which is similar to the Miyagi comparison above. Keep in mind, we never see Miyagi's mentor either.

reply

So anyone in this village is capable of magic kung fu and they only taught it to........two people?

reply

Again, are you familiar with the wuxia genre? Or have you ever read a comic featuring martial artists?

Typically, only the best fighters can learn these techniques or they’re restricted somehow.

reply

You need to stop talking about other movies, this is the MCU.

reply

And Shang Chi comics have the same sort of tropes. See the thing happening in the movie? That happens in the comics. That’s why it’s there.

reply

This is why I was skeptical of this movie. I don’t like the martial arts genre. I like superhero movies.

reply

I don't get it either, and they said the power can be taken away, after the mother leave the village, she has no power.

If it can be take away, does it mean it can be given?

reply

Her power is from the dragon, the protector. She is supposed to be similar to the iron fist.

reply

I kind of thought that his Mom and Aunt had a particular genetic bloodline that allowed them to air-bend and have the special super powers.
And therefore by default, Shang-Chi and his Sister would have the powers too but only when they were in the realm of Ta Lo.

reply

Why can they only do it in their village?

reply

Didn’t Shang-Chi’s Mum say her powers were connected to the Great Protector - aka the Water dragon?
I’m probably wrong but I thought that was why she no longer had her abilities when she left Ta Lo.

reply

I believe it was just her family since it was the mother, her sister, and Shang-Chi who are the only people who are shown to have this ability (perhaps Xialing will have it as well in the future). It's never explained in the film how they have this power, but maybe has something to do with having "the heart of a dragon". They also seem to only be able to express this ability while in Ta Lo and near the dragon.

reply

High midichlorian count.
