So that guy would rather risk dying in a shootout

rather than just giving Jesse 2 grand? that seemed so dumb to me, i get he thought Jesse had a shit gun but that still seemed dumb to me, just give him the fucking 2 grand and he's gone, why even take the small chance he could shoot you?

reply

He was high on cocaine, arrogant (underestimated Jesse after he saw him as a slave earlier) and most importantly, he tried to look cool in front of his friends/co-workers.

reply

Nailed it.

reply

It was a big factor that his partner in crime was basically calling him a pussy for having given him any money at all so he would have been humiliated giving him more, even if it was just 2 k.

reply

Jessie killing him from the hip with the revolver in his pocket was even more unrealistic than the automated machine gun Walter made at the end of Breaking bad. People train for years to shoot accurately from the hip... without a jacket in the way.

reply

Yeah but it looked cool and surprised the **** out of me.

reply

How did it surprise you? They show him grab 2 guns from the safe minutes earlier.

reply

Oh cool. So even though they didn't actually show him taking both guns, you knew he was going to fire a gun out of his left coat pocket instead of draw the other gun during the showdown.

Sure thing, bro.

reply

I thought the same thing-- he must have the second gun in his other hand. It was still cool to see it play out.

reply

[deleted]

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to put that together. He grabbed two guns minutes earlier and had his hand in his pocket...

reply

I find the machine gun more unrealistic.
The hip shooting was just bad writing going along with that the op says: the whole scene is stupid and unrealistic, getting killed over 2 grands is ridicolous for somebody that just hit the jackpot like that bum. But it is still possible. That machine gun killing everybody instead was totally cartoonish, making Walt into a super genius or a super lucky idiot.

reply

I Agree! the odds of his machine gun plan working were astronomical!

reply

Mythbusters did an episode of Breaking Bad and almost none of the coolest scenes and effects worked.

reply

Ahahah, I can totally see them trying the meth cooking in a RV...what else did they try on the show?

reply

1) Hydrofluoric Acid in a bathtub. Didn't work. They took the worst bathtub on the market, chipped its paint, and added a special sauce to sulfuric acid to make is super potent and it still didn't work. It reacts quicker with flesh and loses its potency very rapidly.
2) "This is not meth" scene with Fulminated Mercury. It actually works, but you need a lot more of that to create the same kinda boom and everyone inside would die instantly from that kind of explosion xD.
3) Machine Gun in a car is actually the most probable of them all. If it's rigged to a swiping machine it will absolutely obliterate regular cardboard houses and whatever inside at that distance.

reply

Interesting...
Thanks for the recap Alex.

reply

The acid thing kinda worked, if it was given a month of time to brew. The thing about acid dissolving is you are going to be dissolving it for a month and you better hope the neighbours dont complain about the smell.

Also you want to use acid thats storable in plastic as thats most bathrubs nowadays.

reply

He didn't do it for the 2 grand it was more about looking like a pussy in front of his partner who was already dissing him for giving him any money at all earlier. It would have been humiliating for him to hand him over more even if it was just 2 k.

reply

Agree

While on the subject of that welder, he and the other fake FBI agent had the upper hand in that apartment scene earlier in the movie. From the welder's perspective, there was no reason to even give Jesse his third of the share. He was prepared to kill for it, and Jesse was defenseless at that point (gunshots would make noise, yes, but you didn't have to use a gun).

Obviously we sympathize with Jesse as the main character and wanted him to live, but just saying the welder kind of blew it twice in this movie by making bad decisions.

reply

No, the first time he spared him was justified

reply

Bingo, my thoughts exactly

reply

They needed to have a climax and give Jesse a big victory before he achieved his goal.

He in-universe explanation is that he was just an arrogant prick on drugs.

reply

Jesse had a .22. There was no "risk of dying in a shootout. A .22 cant even break bone at close range.

Also cocaine. Lots and lots of cocaine.

reply

Tons of people have been killed by a .22 LR; it's one of the (if not the) most common cartridges used in homicides and suicides due to its ubiquity.

reply

You can be killed, but you have to get unlicky and get hit between ribcages into the hear or bleed out without medical attention. The punch of .22 LR isnt big. Its a pidgeon killer, not a human killer. Its used the most due to how popular it is in handguns. People do not usually carry around longbarrel weapons even if they are criminal.

reply

You said:

"There was no "risk of dying in a shootout."

Then you said:

"You can be killed"

Which means you've conceded.

"Its a pidgeon killer, not a human killer."

You're contradicting yourself. In any case, in reality, the .22 LR has probably killed more humans than any other cartridge, not counting wars. There absolutely is a risk of dying in a shootout with someone who has a .22 LR.

With that scene, I assume the dude was driven by his friends’ taunting. He didn’t want them to think of him as a sissy. One of the friends was openly talking smack

He might’ve given Jesse the money if no one else was around. He gave Jesse the 1/3 when only he and Jesse were there.

reply

I agree it was dumb of him, but there was more than 2 grand at stake. If he killed Jesse, he was going to get Jesse's money. He asked Jesse where his money was and Jesse told him it was in his car. That is when it is decided that they will have a shootout over each others bag of money.
