Is this film's plot "pointless" & "meandering"

I'm genuinely asking. It just hit digital & I Was looking forward to it but the word of mouth has been not that great.

Would you recommend it or is it more 'artsy' than you'd expect? Those kinda films aren't really my thing.

reply

it's very artsy, and it's also great

reply

Its very artsy and kinda wtf?

reply

Would you still recommend though?

reply

Well I gave it 6/10. I bet its great to watch high. I mean it looks great, the acting is great but its overlong and meandering with a slight storyline.

reply

Oh, one of THOSE ones huh?

Noice. Will definitely try that maybe.

reply

I wouldn't call it artsy at all. It's very understandable, and avoids the randomness and whimsicality that I associate with "art films." It's really a quite charming and thought-provoking film, and one that is paced well. It kept me on the edge of the seat as I waited for various scenes to resolve, as well as the film itself. It's not "Peter Jackson's The Green Knight," so don't go into it expecting armies of CGI trolls or dragons or you'll be quite disappointed.

reply

i would, it is

reply

might have liked it had i gone to film school
but i am just a dude who watches tons of movies
i hated this, i found it pointless
i read about this filmmakers points, and i still hate it

reply

That's why I honestly don't care for the "artsy" films. I know it's a 'metaphor' or whatever but it's just not my thing

Be it a drama, sci-fi, thriller or action film, I just wanna be entertained or enthralled for 90min - 2hrs. That's it.

reply

Honestly? Having just watched it... it was way less pointless, meandering, abstruse and just downright pretentious than I was hoping for.

(I'm not being ironic, by the way, I'm seriously into that kind of thing.)

It's... eh. Enjoyable, mostly? Some inspired visuals, enough of a plot to keep you interested... but really, in my book, nothing too special, at the end of the day.

It was the first movie that I saw in the theater post pandemic. It has some nice cinematography and the script is ok, some of the dark scenes are a bit too dark to tell what's happening. The acting is good and actually think that Dev Patel does a pretty good job as Gawain.

But, if you are wanting to watch something King Arthur related then the best thing by magnitudes is still Excalibur (1981).

reply

Excalibur is da shit.

reply

i thought it was great.
is it artsy? kinda? but in a david lowery/a ghost story sort of way. i've listened to a few podcasts on it now, and it's apparently a bit more comprehensible if you know the source material.

personally, i thought it was terrific. went to see it twice, in fact. i think it's filled with great sights, great images, & has an ending that i kinda saw coming but that i still absolutely loved.

ymmv as the kids so often say, but i highly recommend giving it a chance. but watch it when you're well rested, alert, and be prepared for something that's quiet and sometimes a bit sombre. i'd say go see it in a theatre rather than watching it at home, though. this is a film that i think needs the forced focus of a theatre viewing.

It's very artsy. I don't mind 'artsy' as long as it's also entertaining, something like The Lighthouse or films by David Lynch. I also enjoy slow and weird films like 'Pig' that came out earlier this year as I felt that film had some really profound things to say about life and was anchored by arguably the best performance from Nicolas Cage I've seen.

As for The Green Knight I really did feel this movie was rather uninteresting, I just didn't find much compelling about it at all and I really did want to like it. I found it slow and weird but just devoid of solid storytelling. It's beautifully shot but to me had no interesting themes and seemed a waste of it's Arthurian setting, such a missed opportunity.

Have you seen 'A Ghost Story'? If so you'll likely enjoy this. I didn't care for either film and I don't think I'll be watching another David Lowery film in the future. It's all personal preference as to what you look for in a movie but The Green Knight definitely seems to be a "love it or hate it" film.

a ghost story is one of my all-time favourite films. & i loved green knight. so i think your theory checks out.

this is not a sword & sorcery romp for sure.

all i can say is that it worked almost perfectly for me. i do think it could have been just a bit shorter. a ghost story was a slowly paced movie, but it came in right around 90m. to me, that's kinda the sweet spot as far as film length goes when you're moving at such a contemplative speed. once you got past that length, i think you start bumping up against the limits of the typical human attention span.

i still really enjoyed tgk, & would absolutely recommend giving it a chance, but i do think it would have worked a bit better if it had been trimmed down a little.

reply

Yeah exactly, I'd always say give these movies a chance if only to see something different, it's never going to be everyone's cup of tea and these movies aren't made for the masses like say a Marvel movie.

As I said I didn't care much for A Ghost Story either, but I thought the pie eating scene was incredible and probably the best representation of grief I've ever seen in a film, but some friends of mine think the scene is just overlong and pretentious, it's all subjective.

There's stuff in The Green Knight I liked as well, mainly cinematography and the acting but I didn't take much else away from it I'm afraid. Maybe I'll love David Lowery's next film though, who knows haha.

reply

have you seen his remake of pete's dragon or old man & the gun?

i think they're both really good, & nothing like his other movies. even if you have a deep distaste for his other ones, i think they're worth a shot.
