How they should have handled the "New Captain America" thing...

One flaw in the show, was that you'd think the officials in charge would have had more sense about the "introducing the New Captain America" thing. Don't just announce him with fanfare and raise expectations for things that this guy will never be able to do, ease him into the role, or ease several people into the role! Do a stealth rollout first, have him or them do some heroic things and start rumors and speculative stories, see how he/they handles stressful situations, see what a regular human can accomplish with the shield, and see how the public responds, etc.

Because yes, "THEY", it would make more sense have a corps of guys who get a week-long shift with the shield or something than to just stick one guy with impossible expectations, let several team members get some time off to have a private life and recuperate from whatever injuries they've earned by being a normal human trying to do superhuman things, call them the "America Shield Corps" or whatever. That way, no one person would either crumble under the stress of trying to live up to Captain America's legacy, or develop a superhero-sized ego because they think they're a real superhero.

Yes, I know they started with the original Captain America by just making the announcement and using him for publicity, but he actually had superpowers! They couldn't, or shouldn't have done the same, when trying to replace a superhero with a non-enhanced human.

The public loved Walker all the way until he killed that one dude. The problem wasn’t in the introduction.

reply

Well, of course the public loved him, because they've been given unrealistic expectations about the "New Captain America"! Expectations that he couldn't live up to, and which left the public feeling shocked and betrayed when he turned out not to be just like Steve Rogers after all!

Quite frankly, anyone with a decent knowledge of psychology or human nature could have seen Walker's problems coming. AND the public's reaction to Walker's issues.

I’m not sure how your solution makes anything better, though. If anything, it seems like it would increase the hype.

I have to agree - the public at large seemed very receptive at the outset

WE hated him of course, because we identify with Sam and Bucky (along with his facial expressions while watching Walker on TV)

But we see, from the outset, that he’s actually a good man trying to live up to an impossible ideal

We spend the show waiting for him to turn dark, and he did, but I loved how he redeemed himself at when the time finally came.

None of that required in-universe hype

In the comics Walker had somewhat of following before becoming Capt and he was already getting attention. Even fought and won against Steve in a fight

reply

Tell me about the fight against Steve. If Steve has powers and Walker doesn't, how the heck did Walker win?

reply

He already had powers in his comic debut. Its shown in flashbacks he was experimented on when he was in the miltary

That makes a lot more sense than sending a regular human out to be Captain America, thanks!

But then, they wanted the guy to crash in the course of one season, so I guess they decided to put more pressure on the character.
