The whole sympathetic tone for such an unlikable character was the most contrived storyline since Handmaid’s Tale.
She had no redeemable qualities. Zero. Even her own goons started to think she was crazy. And now Sam carries her body out as if she hasn’t murdered a soul? Give me break.
Yes, this was all extremely poor writing.
She told her soldiers they would have to kill all the hostages. Why was Sam so eager to save her and defend her after the fact? He looked at Sharon like she murdered the woman in cold blood instead of saving his life from a terrorist about to blow his brains out.
The whole thing was so forced and didn't work a bit. I wrote about in a different post but the writing here is awful.
The casting and writing of her character hurt the series big time. I'm not sure what happened. It seemed like they were trying to do an atypical villain, but missed the mark by a mile on every level.

It wasn't like she earned the role based on the merit of her acting abilities or the fact that she actually fit the role of an anti-nationalist terrorist organization. In reality it should have been a very charismatic, disillusioned, ex-special forces (likely mixed race or maybe Middle-Eastern) with PTSD who goes on an extreme Left binge trying to deconstruct nationalism using terrorist tactics. There have actually been a few people like that in real life, and so having an unhinged super soldier variant of that in the show would ring a lot more true than having some barely-out-of-college, miniature lesbian leading a group of international terrorists.
It sticks out like a sore thumb against the rest of Marvel casting though. I can't think of anyone else in the series who was badly cast. And she ended up having such a central role...it was the one part, other than John Walker where they had to get the casting really on the nose. It is suspicious that she got two parts in really big Disney properties playing a similar character. There must be someone with influence at Disney pulling some strings for her.

This show had two points to make. Number ONe, introduce Capitan America replacement, and a bad one at that.
And a lot of anti-American racial woke propaganda.
Everything else was filler they did not care about.
Her character was simply terribly written for a person that does evil deeds because she suffered her whole life. There wasn't enough background story, no moments that convinces the audience that "yeah that's a nice person gone terribly bad because of all the suffering and agony she went through".
I felt sad for Isaiah Bradley but didn't feel a thing for Karli, can't even convince myself that she was simply someone who's gone insane.
Isaiah Bradley literally stated that "nothing has changed" racially in this country, since he was a super solider, during the freaking Korean War.
Not one character in the series pushed back on that stupid, insulting and anti-American statement in the entire series.
If anything, the characters treated his position and P.O.V. with respect and their actions and statements implied that they, at this point in time, were finally going to try to challenge the oh so racist America by the incredibly daring act of making a black guy Capt. America.
Isiah's character wasn't a problem. I wouldn't have minded more of him tbh - Carl Lumby is a good actor. Isiah is a bitter old man, tainted by his experiences, but there are people who are really like that. A handful of people did terrible to him years ago, but it has nothing to do with what's going on today. But like I said, people are stupid. They make blanket judgements, so his reaction is normal.
It's the rest of the anti-American crap that is off-base.
Isiah's character was brilliant IMO, excellent acting that conveyed exactly what it was supposed to (whether the viewer liked him or not).
The Karli actor was weak and one dimensional (one people, one dimension lol), for a role that demanded nuance. She must have slept with the right lesbians.
His character would have had a good arc, if he was shown being shocked and pleased by the complete lack of push back to a "black cap America".
As it is, the movie is pretending that recognizing a black hero is some huge step forward for this country, like we have not done that plenty of times.

Karli was not good. The only time she had any presence, was when Sam assumed she was a hostage and she turned out to be the villain. Cool. The villain is a little girl. That was a good scene. If it was 1951, that would have been downright shocking.
