Questions about Zemo's past

So I know Zemo from the comic. I thought I knew Zemo from the Civil War movie.

In the movie, Zemo was getting revenge for his fallen family in Slokovia (?). Why all of a sudden does he have a plane, butler, connections, can kick serious ass, and knows everything about Hydra? I'm genuinely asking if I missed all that backstory in the MCU, or did they whip up all that for him to fit in this series?

reply

In Civil War, it's explained that he was the head of Sokovian CIA. He decrypted the files Black Widow released on the internet, learned all of Hydra's secrets, tracked down the Hydra agent who had the Winter Soldier journal, then framed Bucky in an elaborate international attack so that the Avengers would kill each other. He was set up since the beginning as a very dangerous individual. This is the first time we hear about him being a Baron, but it wouldn't have served a purpose to mention in Civil War.

Cheers, AP. I honestly missed that part of him being the head of the Sokovian CIA.

I don't think he was head of their CIA; FRIDAY identified him as head of a Sokovian black ops squad

Maybe that's a potato / potah-toe distinction, but as a black ops guy, I'd seen him as an operator more than an intelligence-gatherer.

What I found interesting is the implication in this show that he could've escaped at any time. He's got the brains and resources, and he executed that escape pretty smoothly with no more help than Bucky passing a note (a note Zemo probably wrote specifically to trigger that particular prisoner against his regular opponent).

He probably figured he'd be safer in a German prison than out and about with Wakanda after him.

And even here, he's not helping Bucky and Sam for any reason other than his own: he wants to eliminate super-soldiers.

There is a mobile game released in 2018 (Marvel Strike Force) in which the character is called Baron Zemo, way before this last episode.

I was referring to the MCU version of Zemo. The character of Baron Zemo has been around since the early 60’s in one fashion or another.

I think the original Zemo was the guy that Cap and Bucky were after during WW2, who launched the rocket that killed Bucky and knocked Steve out for decades.

Now I'm thinking maybe that was Baron Zemo's father?

reply

Yup. Heinrich Zemo was the first and was responsible for Bucky’s “death”. He was killed off and his son Helmut took over the mantle. He’s the one who has been a major Marvel villain.
