Ensign Mariner

Does anyone else find her annoying or is it just me?

reply

I think others on this board feel the same way. She is over the top childish/selfish. Really hurts the stories. They just need to tone her down. Focus more on her relationship with her captain/mother in a more serious manner. Yes its a cartoon but it needs to be more grounded.

I agree on toning her down. I like the show overall, I think it is now my favorite of all the new Trek. At first it was meh (mostly because of her) but it grew on me. She still bugs me, I try to ignore her. I like other characters like that nerdy guy Boimler and Tandi, well pretty much everyone except Mariner. I'm not that into that cat doctor either (and I love cats), I just don't find the character funny for now.

Shes abusive to her peers esdpecially boomer or what ever his name is. I also find the characters in general are too hyper in the show. Like classic daffy duck spazing out hyper. The characters are just way too hyper. I agree mariner is the weakest link in the characters and I don't like how the script always lets her get away with everything. I keep watching hoping the show will get better but the characters are just so spun up its horrible.

reply

Yeah, they are too hyper - her especially! But I don't mind the others, unlike HER!

I don't like how she gets away with everything either. In episode 7 I really hoped that she was incompetent but then it turned out she was just pretending and that she is a badass action hero. I was disapointed as I was gloating at her not being good at something.

Yes she is overprotected by plot armor. Its like she's happy being a screw up but the plot demands she be a mary sue so she activily has to try to fail. There is just to much of suspensin of disbelief. If you accept the plot line line that she is really awsome you have to accept she';s a mary sue but a real asshole for putting her crew in such danger by neglecting tricorders etc.

Yeah, I was thinking of calling her Mary Sue but wasn’t sure if the terminology was appropriate for her character. As I thought Mary Sue types are not just good at everything they do (which Mariner fits) but also they are like good and respectable characters who do things by the book and follow rules (which Mariner isn’t). I might be wrong though.

Mariner actually started to grow on me. I don’t know if I started to tolerate her more because I got used to her or she has become less obnoxious in last couple of episodes. I really liked the finale and she didn’t bother me that much, almost at all.

Now having watched the whole season I must say I quite enjoyed it. I loved the easter eggs, most of the characters and the finale was great. This is now offically my favorite of the new Star Trek shows.

I think a Mary Sue just implies shes good at and gets what ever a character wants. A Mary Sue is a cjharacter that is just awsome at everything they do with out training. IE A Mary Sue doesn't grow or have a dipiction of growing in a story. Think doogie howser were a character becomes a doctor at age 14. Its not the Mary Sue trope that bothers me. Its the abusive nature she has towards her peers. Shes not just obnoxious she's out right insulting. Also her disdain for authority or anyone giving her advise is evident. By her own admission she'd rather be sent to the brig then ordered to attend therapy which makes no sense as mariner cleasrly means she values her freedom above all elsee so why would they write her to prefer the brig other then to show how badass she is.

I agree it seems like in the last 3 episodes the characters became less shrill in there dialog but they still talked fast and ran over every one around them. It almost feels like each character is reading from their sdcript the split second and almost right on top of their partners last syllable which indicates poor timing as the characters would have to have pre knowledge of their partners dialog before speaking(IE This is a giveasway they are reading from a script breaking suspension of disbeleif.). Like how many takes did they do for their dialog to sound so precanned and unnatural.

i think they are ALL supposed to be annoying

reply

You might be on to something, I get what you mean. They are all annoying exaggerated people/characters, and that can be funny. But she is too annoying that she has opposite effect on me.

fair enough
