Even though Olivia Colman headlines, Jessie Buckley does the heavy lifting

Fantastic film all around. Olivia Colman delivers stellar work as always in a deft taciturn performance. I'd say, however, that Jessie Buckley stands out as the younger version of the same character who goes through more significant developments.

All in all, this intimate character-based drama is an intense ride. Maggie Gyllenhaal shines with an assured writing/directorial debut that suggests even greater potential in the future.

In the present-day part of the movie, Coleman's character engages in a lot of unmotivated crazy behavior. Ed Harris is wasted in a minor role that goes nowhere. A psycho bitch shanks Coleman in the gut with a huge hat pin just because Coleman took her kid's doll for a few days, even though she gave it back. The audience is led to believe Coleman's daughter is dead, but it turns out she's fine. The movie had potential, but had many problems and fell far short of "fantastic".

I have to agree with you.

The movie didn't deliver the goods, although the acting and direction were top notch.
