I feel it might be a mockumentary sort of thing that just looks real, but I'm not sure.

Looks suspicious. Not illegal to make fake documentary, happens often.

Whether it's real or not, it certainly piqued my interest.

Just watched it and it is a real documentary but it takes a weird turn about halfway through where you learn that what you've been seeing isn't exactly on the up and up. It's a little slow at times but overall worth a watch imo.
