the ending?

why was he crying?

reply

Mostly because he got the weight of finding Gracie off his chest. And also because he finally came to terms with the shitty life he was living.

reply

This, but also I think there was an element of Survivors Guilt, or guilt he wasn't able to help Gracie sooner.

reply

Everyones praising him as some hero, yet he thinks he shouldve saved her sooner. It was a great ending

Relief, everything has in the end worked out for him. His detective business has had a totally upswing. He solved the case that was haunting and ruining his life. He was accepted back by the community that shunned him. It's the first time he could sit down and take in all the hurt and pain he put himself through as Principal Erwin said he put the whole world on his young shoulders. First time he's able just to let out all his feelings. It's pretty heartbreaking stuff.

reply

Relief. I think I agree.

Watching the film again, I notice he doesn't have any close friends he could speak to. Probably his parents are his closet. His roommate, doesn't seem to be any ill will there with them but they don't seem overly close either to sit down and chat his problems too. His Secretary hates his guts until the very end and doesn't seem the type you can sit down and talk too. Caroline is the first person in his life he could sit down and talk to about himself and even that is stopped. But she's still a teenager who doesn't know herself yet. Funny thing is the Principal is the only one he probably opens up to the most in the film. I would have liked to see maybe Gracie in a few more scenes been seen as maybe one of Abe's only friends making her disappearance hit harder for him.

The fact he breaks down on his own in relief is terribly sad.

reply

Kinda the point . For someone who is so broken and cut-off from folks, it's his ark. Definitely sad, on purpose. I love how movies can manipulate our emotions, it's one of the reasons I keep watching. Any mood I'm in, there's a movie for that mood.

reply

He was crying because despite a good script and his good performance, he had a detective's hunch that the movie would not make it big.

reply

Brutal and fair.

lol

Good film though -
I just saw peeps talking about it here on moviechat, so I downloaded it - I was pleasantly surprised.
