Why'd Ransom hire the private investigator??

The movie claimed he did so in order to make sure the nurse got nailed for Harlan's death, but the toxicology report would've already done that (assuming she hadn't switched the bottles). A private investigator wouldn't have been necessary if all had gone as planned.

He also tried to frame her for blowing up the health lab, didn't he?

interesting point. movie does explain he did it because it came out as suicide instead of a error/murder and going to the law directly might make him a suspect. but it seems a bit of a stretch.
