Piano keys

Did anyone understand the significance of Blanc hitting the piano keys during the initial interviews with the family at the beginning? He hit them in response to certain answers the family gave. I feel like it meant something but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

I thought it meant that the interviews were going into discussions he did not care about. Basically I think it was a reminder for the cops to get the interviews back on track.

You’re probably right.

In the commentary track Rian Johnson says that initially he wanted Blanc to be sitting behind the couch and to tap it with his foot when he wanted the detective to ask certain questions, etc. However, that didn't really work out with the positioning of everyone, but there was a piano in the room so he had him strike a key on the piano instead.

After Blanc hits the piano key Lieutenant Elliot always asks the same question (What time did you arrive at the house).

reply

what note did he hit anyway? sounded like a c# to me.

reply

I’m not a musician, I have no idea. That’s an interesting question, though.

reply

He's hitting in the area where there are 3 black keys. So it's either a G or a A. Most likely a G.

It cannot possibly be C# because he's hitting a white key.

reply

how did you see where he was hitting? i thought he was always in the background..

oh well..
is it always the same note?

reply

You can even see it in the trailer:

OK so i paused the shit out of 0:24 and here is the exciting conclusion:

we now deduct that IF in fact the grouping on the highest keys goes -|||--||--|- then if can only be a piano with a keyboard containing 76-keys. taking that into consideration the finger is pressing down on the white key just to the left of the final G♭/F# key and indeed if the audio department does not lie (while editing the film) the note heard must absolutely be an 'F'
