Magnets and video tape

I remember in the 90s a story in " eastenders" a soap over here in UK. A character put a videotape in a speaker cabinet that he was going to blackmail with. The tape was wiped. So it must be true. I immediately moved all my videos from the shelf as they were near a speaker!

I believe it takes a stronger magnet than that fridge decoration to erase a tape, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief.

I used to work in a factory that made commercial video tapes, sometimes they would need to erase certain batches. The magnets used were electro-magnets, big ones that the tapes had to pass through. There's no way a fridge magnet would wipe a tape like that, it might cause some slight issues with playback, but not enough to cause complete erasure.

I winced a little when I saw her keyring magnet, but I'm prepared to suspend my disbelief a little for the purposes of enjoying the film.
