Question about the Final Scene (spoiler)

What was the actual cause of Clare's fall? Did Irene accidentally push her with her outstretched arm? Or did John accidentally push her as he was reaching for her? It happened so quickly that I couldn't tell.

The score by Dev Hynes was absolutely perfect.

I don't think we're meant to know--I just read the wiki synopsis of the novel it's based on, and it's left up in the air there as well.

Maybe better that way. Both Irene and John looked devastated so I don't believe either of them would have consciously done it. I started to worry the moment Irene first opened the window.

Also, how did John know Claire was there? Did Irene let him know where she was?

In the book, John knows that Clare is going to a party with Irene & Brian so he goes to their house and questions their maid about the address. I don't think the movie makes this clear.

It's a quick read and definitely helps illuminate some aspects of the film.
