Is this movie any good?

I am thinking of seeing it. I don't care for Bill Murray or Owen Wilson but that is OK.
What I really don't like is movie's preaching to you. Does this one do that?

reply

Haven't seen this one but no other movie of Wes A is preachy ...

reply

i'm just back from catching it.

it's definitely not preachy. don't know if you're familiar with wes anderson, but whatever criticisms you want to make of him, i can't see how preachy would ever be one.

here's what i wrote on letterboxd.

it's definitely a wes anderson movie. and a film for new yorker snobs, i guess.

i'm an anderson agnostic, i suppose. it seems ill-natured to beat up on someone who clearly puts so much effort into what he's doing, but at the same time, not one of his films has ever really stuck with me, resonated in any way.

they're all fine. they're cute. but...paddington 2 is the best version of a wes anderson universe. the day he makes something like that, he'll have won my devotion. for now, he's got my grudging respect.

the art story was the best of the bunch.
i didn't care for the manifesto piece.
the last story was pretty good, elevated by that animated bit.

it's cute. it's perfectly watchable. i don't care if i ever see it again and i don't care if he never makes another movie.

extra 1/2 star for some surprisingly enjoyable nudity. bring nudity back to the theatres, please.

3.5/5

French Dispatch: I haven't wanted a movie to end so much since Russell Crow and Anthony Hopkins in that movie about Noah.

Especially the story about the prisoner doing modern art. Though the chase scene in the wheel chair was funny.

I liked it.

Have you watched any of Wes Andersons movies before?

reply

I need to look and see what they are

reply

Grand Budapest Hôtel is truly excellent and Owen Wilson and Bill Murray are blink and you miss it in there.

reply

I liked it

I'll let you know when it hits the Redbox. I do watch all this guy's films but they're not as good as they used to be.

It’s like he fluctuates. Royal Tenenbaums was a masterpiece, and I didn’t feel that same level of affection for The Life Aquatic or Darjeeling Limited. But the Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, and Grand Budapest Hotel were perfect.

reply

No. It sucks

reply

It has a few good moments, looks stylish and has a great cast, but isn't very good overall.
