Alex Kurtzman said the first 2 seasons were necessary to earn the return of the old cast

I suspect by the end of season 2, they lost most of the audience - I don't think he knows what the word 'earn' means

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman told the audience at the San Diego Comic-Con why it took so long to bring back the beloved characters.

"When we first started, of course the first instinct is to bring back the entire crew of The Next Generation, and Patrick was amazing because he said to us: 'If we're going to do this, what I don't want to do is repeat old things. If we're going to get to the crew, then we have to earn it.'

"I think we took two seasons to earn that return. What we didn't want to do was have the crew return and do sort of cameos, we actually wanted everybody to have really significant roles and whet appetites a bit to see them together."

Didn’t they film Season 2 & 3 back to back? If so then they knew they got the cast back before the second season aired.
