Those synths from the portal seemed borgX1000.
It could have just as easily been a lifeform which is borgX1000 in terms of destruction - like a virus of gigantic proportions.
In other words, a destructive force is a destructive force, regardless of whether it's synthetic or not.
Borg is not synth, it's mostly organic. And it doesn't try to destroy all biologic life but to incorporate intelligent organic life.
