Why the "Sheer f'ing hubris" line?

Does it seem to you that the admiral lady saying "sheer f'ing hubris" to Picard was an overreaction to what Picard was requesting. All he wanted was to be reinstated at the lower rank of captain and given any spare starship for one mission. I don't think he asked for the Enterprise or any other top of the line Sovereign class starship. Just a ship, and he did save the Earth at least twice in the movies. Who knows how many times in the "Next Generation." To me it seems they wanted to throw in an F-bomb that didn't fit into the situation because what Picard was asking for wasn't much at all.

Obviously the F-bomb was just for shock value, but I'd agree it doesn't make sense, even in a world that recognizes "colorful metaphors" like "double dumbass on you."

But despite being a world-saver, Picard has also stood up against the Federation enough times to be considered a troublemaker. So his request could be seen as arrogant, at least from the viewpoint of a bureaucratic hack like that admiral seemed to be. She saw him asking for a favor from the same institution he'd just publicly trashed on TV.

We actually discussed this in two other threads on here:

The shorthand explanation is, you've got a bunch of young, idiotic writers who just assume they can graft on today's society, which they view as dark, depressing, xenophobic, and trying to be hip by spewing the F-word in every sentence; onto a society that has already been established as optimistic, peaceful, and has grown beyond using childish "colorful metaphors" all the time. It's like the only Trek they ever watched was JJ's movies and "Shitscovery," and just assumed they should write every "Star Trek" show to be like that.

I've seen the first episode on youtube the other day. It seemed to be pretty decent. Is this show worth it in further episodes?

reply

The second episode, in my opinion, is even more boring and talkative than the first was. The third one releases any day now, but from the previews they're still stuck on Earth for the duration of that one, too. It's one very slow burn of a show.

Irumodic Syndrome was

**a degenerative neurological disorder that caused deterioration of the synaptic pathways**.

The condition **caused confusion, delusions, and eventually death**. It could take several years to develop and several more before it proved deadly.

Most likely what's going on is that wasn't the FIRST TIME that PICARD has asked that ADMIRAL do to a FAVOR for him.

Because the next person he goes to asking for help also TELLS HIM to GET LOST at GUN POINT (when she tells him to GET BACK into the SPACE CAB).

**Picard brings Wine | Star Trek Picard**

So what that indicates is PICARD's probably been making a PEST of himself with that ADMIRAL and with this other character.

And that may also be the reason why ADM. CLANCY says this to him:

There is no peril here only the pitiable delusions of a once-great man desperate to matter

And the DELUSIONS may also be the reason why she's FED UP with PICARD coming to her and asking her to let him have a SHIP (which he may also have done several times before we see him doing it again).

Because the CONDITION that he has also causes someone to have DELUSIONS and HALLUCINATIONS (which he may also be having the entire time that we've been watching him in this show so far).

NOTE the way he's also wearing that **OLD FASHIONED SUIT** right before he does the TV INTERVIEW.

Also NOTE the way he wears a much **more MODERN LOOKING SUIT** when he visits CLANCY.

And NOTE the way you also see the DIXON HILL DETECTIVE STYLE HAT sitting there on top of the HAT RACK when he looks into the MIRROR at himself right before he does the TV INTERVIEW.

And NOTE the way it also looks like it's sitting on TOP of his head as he GAZES at himself in the MIRROR.

All of this adds up to the POSSIBILITY of us having an UNRELIABLE NARRATOR who tells us this story due to the IRUMODIC SYNDROME he has which AFFECTS his brain.

And that could also mean the scene with the ADMIRAL also never really took place (except for in the confused mind of PICARD).

Interesting thought, but I had the distinct impression that Picard hasn't visited or talked to anyone in Starfleet in years; likely since shortly after he resigned in protest after the cancellation of the Romulan rescue mission. (I'll exempt his immediate friends like Riker et al.) So, I disagree. He hasn't asked anyone in Starfleet for a favor. I think she was furious because of the interview.

reply

You might be right about his not having spoken to anyone at STAR FLEET in YEARS …

but that would probably also mean he hasn't visited his PERSONAL ARCHIVE either in several years???

And WHY would he STORE his things there when he also has that HUGE HOME at the VINEYARDS where he could store them???

Anyhow, what's also interesting is how at the END of his VIDEO WESLEY from the TNG also let us have a SNEAK PEAK at EP 4 where we see PICARD DRESSED UP in an OLD FASHIONED WHITE SUIT and a WHITE HAT:

Star Trek: Picard - Episode 3 "The End Is The Beginning" Recap - The Ready Room

And as a GIFT he also brings a little boy a 3 MUSKETEERS BOOK to read.

So my guess is this might be the FREECLOUD place that RAFFI mentioned???

And it also might be located inside of the HOLODECK on the SHIP that they're on now???

Also LOVE the PILOT who has the other HOLOGRAPHIC character that's been CREATED in HIS OWN IMAGE.

Because I'd also LOVE to have another COPY of MYSELF that I could also talk to like he does.

Especially since JOI from BLADE RUNNER 2049 was also a HOLOGRAM too.

Wonder why K never thought to give her a HOLOGRAPHIC TWIN COPY of herself to keep her company while she spent time all alone in his place while he was working???

Or why he didn't think to create another HOLOGRAPHIC TWIN COPY of himself to keep her company???

Maybe because doing that would also have made him JEALOUS of his HOLOGRAPHIC TWIN???

:)

Excellent points.

Saying "fuck" and having a dark tone is the exact opposite what Star Trek is about.

reply

Is this on network TV?

how are they saying "fuck"?

reply

It's on a streaming service CBS owns.

reply

It's on Amazon Prime. I saw the offending show, episode and line. It was jarring indeed.

reply

I noticed the first episode is free on Amazon.

reply

It's on CBS All Access, the same streaming service that has Star Trek: Discovery (which has also used that word at least once).

reply

See the latest episode for more background on Picard's history with Starfleet.

In my opinion, the only time profanity ever fit into Star Trek was during Star Trek IV. The producers of the CBS originals love to throw in profanity for profanity's sake. When they did it on Discovery they really put it out there to show everyone how proud they were to have put the F-word into Star Trek.

reply

Well, they had to try and get there TVMA somehow. :-)
