How is it woke?

A few people have been saying it's a woke mess. I saw the first ep, and didn't get any sort of woke vibe...

Also, kind of sad to hear old Sir Patrick sound like he's having a boxing match with his old man jowels. Lol

Also, they couldn't have done a better job hiding Spiner's age with today's tech? Data looked horrible!

for one they turned the federation into xenophobes. You know because trump is president. Because everything has to be about politics.

reply

Star Trek was originally political and socially conscious.

reply

Yeah but it wasn't dumb political commentary and the human beings weren't a bunch of asshole.

reply

Trek social commentary reflected the era therefore Trumpism should be mentioned. Not within the utopian Federation though.

reply

The Romulans are an allegory for Puerto Rico.

reply

The allegations of wokeness is because Patrick Stewart said himself it's going to a metaphor for Trump and Brexit. There are a lot of rumors about it online from insiders who saw the entire season. There's nothing really woke yet, but we're only into one episode.

reply

I dont get any woke vibes either, but I really enjoyed the first episode and like where they are going with it.

The Data aging issue does not bother me at all...in the TNG episode All Good Things he put grey in his hair to try and age naturally. It always been a quirk of the character wanting to appear more human.

The only thing I found a bit odd is the Vulcan woman in Picards house with an Irish accent. Surprised no one has commented on that...

reply

I believe the two retainers were Romulans, not Vulcans. Doesn't really explain the accents, though.

Star Trek was all about social issues and commentary. Sure. But it was always told through metaphor and Aliens. Not the human. Human in Star Trek were suppose to be above that bitter shit. The fact the Federation has become Trump America. Is very lazy and ruin what Star Trek is about (aka optimism). But im taking to a bunch Dumbass who dosn't get Star Trek.

As of viewing Episode 2, there are some aspects of "Wokeness" included, but it's pretty low-key compared to wokeness I've seen in other tv shows. These include:

- Bitchy, arrogant, insufferable women running Starfleet
- Not a single Alpha male in sight, not even in the decommissioned Borg cube
- So far, Picard hasn't been helped by a single guy on this show; every person he's turned to is female and intelligent (the ancient, crotchety doctor almost doesn't count).
- Picard having to go seek the help of a tough-as-nails black chick with a gun, living in what looks like the same national park where they shot at least 8 or 9 different TOS episodes on "alien" planets

3 episodes in ... it is quite woke ...

reply

Eh. I don't get that in this. There is a more diverse cast. But, like in other current shows, the non-white characters are just as boring as the white characters.
