Not bad so far...

Picard has spent some years trying to escape the past but now an opportunity, a crack of light has appeared shining a possibility of perhaps correcting some of the things he regrets - to makes things better, to heal them.

It's true he's not quite as limber or fit as he was as a younger man, but looks like he will team up with more than capable people to help him in his quest. His friends will include a good pilot, a capable science person, and formidable fighters.

It looks like he will be making back and forth trips between his home and other locations, so this won't be like an extended away mission.

If this episode is any guide the future episodes will be engaging in a modestly arranged and defined story.

Setting up something interesting.

Yes, there seem to be hints of something interesting coming up. And Picard has a lot of characters he can "bounce off" to explore ideas and situations.

this is amazing.

Not interested in ANY Star Trek after 2005.

I don't think this series will have the certitude and variety of TNG or other Trek shows of those years. Picard isn't a Starfleet officer in charge of a formidable ship and doesn't have the team dynamic of the old crew. We can't draw on the personalities we enjoyed watching and which became established in our minds. The new show has a bunch of new people with appearances from older characters - hopefully they get the balance right and this show produces an entertaining dynamic and warmth.

Given the work on Discovery it might be reasonable to doubt the efficacy of the Picard show and to conclude that we will see rather stilted narratives and characters and a preoccupation with identity politics. Still, we might see something good as Picard is a classic character that may motivate them to avoid overplaying the PC angle and instead bring reason back to the table.

I agree - it's pretty decent first episode.
It has decent dialogue, acting, sfx, and it certainly introduces the audience to a pretty big mystery of sorts. The pacing was good - on par with ST discovery season 1, which I thought was great (conversely, I thought STD season 2 was much, much worse and not worth seeing). I suspect this pace might turn many people off - as STTNG's pace was more slow and deliberate. Also, this shares the same season-long story as is the case with STD - which is in stark contract with the episodic format of STTNG - from what I gather, many fans of STTNG don't much care for the quality of the story, as long as it is complete by the end of each episode - so they might not appreciate a season-long story format.

Anyways, we've only seen one episode - who is to say how good the latter episodes will be. It might turn out to be on par with mandalorian, or it might end up like STD season 2 - it's too early to say.

I hope they can integrate the strengths of TNG into this show. Every theme or most themes were treated with intelligence and not solely to create an effect or waves in the audience.

I watched this last night and liked it. got Discovery downloaded on my PC and the shorts but yet to watch them but I think this looks better.

Not all that good either. It still has a lot of the hallmarks of alex kurtzman stupidty.

I felt ST:Discovery was uninspired and the characters somewhat unlikable. So if that is indicative of Alex Kurtzman's ability or creative approach then I can understand why people may be worried about STP.

It'll be necessary for Stewart to make sure that Picard does not become a morose/cynical character that is in keeping with "EmoTrek" instead of the established canon Picard that we know. It's clear that he is happy to cooperate with the creative team and thinks their writing ability is promising, but I hope he will utilise his critical faculty when he is reading the scripts for each episode; and as has been said, that he will tell the producers when the dialogue given to Picard feels right or not. Worth looking at this for input from cast and crew of STP:
