Federation and the Universe have become dystopian.

I get it. It's hard to write compelling fiction in a utopian society, and even harder for modern audiences to relate to it these days. This just isn't what Star Trek is. Makes me crazy that instead of elevating science fiction up to Star Trek standards, they're just dragging Star Trek into the generic muck.

even with the new movies earth still looks utopian to me. Unless you have to work 16 hours days cleaning clams and peeling potatos at Siscos resturant.

Yeah there's really no need to make the Federation dystopian when you have the entirety of the universe to draw from to get enemies to bring the conflict. But every show seems to always has to have the Us against the Man element with secret evil government societies etc.

It's certainly a worthy theme to explore, especially given our own political climate, but a core premise of Star Trek is humanity has evolved beyond that crap. At least it used to be. They've been steadily eroding that premise for a while.
