this is basically TNG V... or Star Trek: TNG Awakens

Looks cool. We have some version of Data, Seven of Nine, with a storyline involving the Borg (you knew they wouldn't be down for good) and a mystery woman somehow connected to them. There were people who thought that half the series would be about Picard on his vineyard. But thankfully, they're taking up the Star Trek storyline 20 years later and running with it - something we've waited almost that long to see!

Data looks kind of fat-faced here - but I guess that's the best they could do given that Spiner's face did get puffier as per this Picard panel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2U4OhLc_HY

7of9 is back - too bad voyager sucked arse (I don't think I liked any of the crew on voyager).

No sign of the rest of the tng crew, though they did note in the panel discussion that number 1 and Deanna will show up for a few segments.

Still, as someone has pointed out earlier - it does appear as if we'll see Picard captain a renegade crew, so it could be all right in the end, if the script is any good (and we'll know that only after seeing the show - or, haha, Spiner begins to voice his lines).

Having said that - I think Stewart's voice was one of the big selling points in the past. It could be the age, but it could also be the ton of theater work he's done in the recent past, but it's clear his voice is really messed up now. It no longer sounds captain-ish - and I wonder if it's going to sell in this series. As such, I suspect we are not going to see much of Stewart from this point forth, unless he gives his voice a rest, and/or fixes vocal chords.

I think this is probably the setup for one or more series to come, which will continue the Trek storyline forward (they have to know this is what fans are looking for). Maybe one traditional TNG style series set aboard a Starfleet vessel, I'm guessing one of the Enterprise successors, and another that has the renegade crew perspective. Aside from DS9 we haven't seen a lot of what life is like for average folks in the Federation. Much less those living on the fringes. But Patrick Stewart himself is almost 80 years old and couldn't do this show for an extended run. Assuming it wasn't always intended to be a one time thing.

I liked some episodes of Voyager a lot. My problem with that show was its erratic quality level. There were good eps, a bunch of mediocre ones, and a few downright awful ones - that episode with the Warp 10 engine and Janeway turning into an amphibian should probably be destroyed and Paramount studios deny it was ever made. 🤫

Looks like bad fan fiction with a cliche plot. The whole thing seems like when they dragged Nimoy into the Jar Jar movies just get more people to watch.

And you get that from a two minute teaser trailer for what's basically a ten hour movie? Patrick Stewart went in with the intention of turning down this project but was convinced to change his mind - I think we should maybe give them the benefit of the doubt and at least watch a few full episodes before deciding it's trash.

reply

It comes across that way to me as well.

I'm not exactly bowled over by the trailer, but I'm at least intrigued enough to give it a chance. Hopefully it will be worth a shit.

It looks a little too much like Discovery, with very clean, antiseptic visuals, and that's concerning. But it's great to see Stewart and Spiner together again.

Yawn.

So it's not actually fully about Picard, rather this latest super-powered all action backflipping, kung-fuing female with a mysterious past...

Awesome. I wonder if this will turn out as well as that super-powered all action backflipping, kung-fuing female with a mysterious past worked out for Star Trek Beyond.

Perhaps Picard will die in second episode like Luke Skywalker - haha

And it will turn out that she is his long lost daughter - so Picard will actually be a reference to her, not the oldie!

Never mind - Stewart shows up in all 10 episodes. 7 of 9 shows up in one episode. Spiner is not even listed on imdb, so perhaps it's just a miniscule memory segment - which makes sense given Data's puffy face in the trailer. And Frakes/Marina will probably get 10 seconds, they too are not listed - though it should be noted that they haven't filmed the last 3 episodes when the comic con panel was done.

I think the Red Letter Media review of the trailer was spot on. They put to words my initial impressions.

Yeap, I watched it yesterday and it was good. The 'Picard dropped in Star Trek Discovery universe' sums it up the trailer... and probably the series.
