lol yeah. and he washed out his undies and had them hanging all over the bathroom and shower and she scolded him for this when she got home. 'dammit, you're hanging your boxers all over the bathroom again?!?!?!'

reply

...and after she yelled at him he ate a pint of ice cream and made a cup of general foods foods international coffee and got in a calgon bath with a book.

reply

Feminist garbage.

reply

PMS in space is a terrible thing, come on.. have you no compassion????

reply

Just curious, what’s wrong with a dad staying home and taking care of kid? Men can be just as vital as women are when it comes to caring for their families.

reply

I think it's leftist progressive BS that's what. AND FROM THIS POINT ON I WILL STOP CAPITULATING TO FUCKING LEFTIST HIPPY TYPES SO BLOCK ME OR BAN ME FROM THE SITE IDGAF ANYMORE.

Trivia question: how many neanderthal women were out killing the wooly mammoth while neanderthal dad stayed back at the cave with the little ones? I'll wait.

reply

Neanderthals lived under quite different curcumstances. Strict gender roles were optimal during their day. Modern societies have very much more capacity and built-in redundancy.

reply

blah blah blah. you activist motherfuckers just want to upset the apple cart so you can then complain that it turned over, like your bolshevik cousins did in 1917. whatever.

yawn I'm tired of all this woke bullshit. you will eventually learn that you can't subvert natural law.

reply

You didn’t debunk my argument.

reply

i likely did elsewhere in this thread. read if you wanna. IDGAF either way.

what bothers mfers like you is you can't subvert nature, hard as you try.

reply

If you don’t give a damn, then why are you here?

BTW, you have no handle on natural law. If strict gender roles were a matter of deep law, then you and I wouldn’t be having this conversation. It would be moot. The modern economy allows people more degrees of freedom than was feasible millennia ago. Women do as a matter of fact pursue adventuresome careers. This means that Nature allows it. If Nature were to abhor women exploring space, then no woman would be doing so.

reply

tose are rationalizations. but they cut bth ways. i guess what is going on here is after 30-50 years of having you woke motherfuckers shoving all this equality down our throats in the name of progress we have just about had anough and decided to finally start defending our more traditional views, wrong as they may seem in your eyes. after all, THAT is the whole reason for counter culture to begin ewith, right?

and just so you know, i am actually a raging liberterian. the bitch can fly a spaceship or whatever she wants, i really don't care. my subjective reaction (hence this op) is quite different from my take on the principles involved in the thing. (whatever it may be)

what i DONT like is subversion. and activism. and woke motherfuckers like you and your friends have a rude awakening coming lol

and i have quite a good handle on natural law, thank you very much.

reply

The OP wants to invoke so-called “natural law” to prove that all women ought to be relegated to a very short list of career opportunities, and that above all else women rightfully ought to be subservient to men.

never said that. not my position at all.

reply

Of course you GAF. You wouldn't go on like this if you didn't. Keep scrolling. I left another love note below.

reply

You think we should live like fucking cavemen?

reply

lol not really. but it's insight into the natural design of things.

my question to you is why do you disprove of her staying home while the dad goes on the mission?

see how that works?

reply

Who said I disapproved of her staying home? Who is saying that?

reply

well whaddya know, it appears we are on the same page!

:)

reply

I don’t think we are, why demean men by suggesting that they shouldn’t be homemakers?

reply

LTUM - who are you angry at, and why are you taking it out on us? Never mind, don’t care. IGNORE.

reply

lol okay then. bye

Guys like him often have a history of being rejected or shamed by a woman. He's probably a fatty and friendless keyboard warrior who attempts to elevate his self-esteem by lashing out ( hiding in anonymity) online against those who present a threat to his weeny ego.

reply

Yeah, this is actually bothering me, I gotta admit. This show is reminiscent of "Another Life" where Katee Sackhoff was in the commander position. Different plot and different sci-fi situation, but similar theme of a mom leaving her husband and kid behind for a long trip. Similar theme of her having trouble getting the crew to trust her, internal self-doubt over her leadership, etc, with the audience meant to understand that OF COURSE she's the best person for the job because women just are.

It doesn't help that these shows try to make these women sound really noble. It's bad enough that they're leaving their kids behind, but I'm also expected to believe it's a sacrifice for the greater good, or something essential for their identity, rather than just what they really want to do instead of be with their kid.

I can't relate because, as a mom, I would never do this.

I think I've overdosed on feminism.

beautiful, beautiful post. very well said.

reply

If it’s bad for men to leave their kids behind, then why is it fine for men to likewise?

reply

I don't think it is, actually, and I don't think men who do this are portrayed in the same justifying way. In The Expanse, for example, Cas Anvar's character Alex leaves his kid behind and his kid recognises it's because Alex would rather be in space. Alex sacrifices his family for the pull of exploration. It's a character flaw and played as such.

At the same time, why do we always have to pretend, every time this comes up, that men and women are identical? I think we are beyond the point where women have to be portrayed as staying home in the kitchen and silently supporting their man. But women are not going to experience life the same way as men, because we are different. I'm tired of female characters on tv being people I have nothing in common with. They are designed to please a few feminist changemakers who probably look down on people like me. They have nothing to say to me. I find their stories boring, unrelatable, and inauthentic.

reply

Everyone knows that men and women aren’t exacly identical in all details. That’s not the problem. The problem is that people’s reproductive organs needn’t be the sole criteria for deciding what they may and may not do with their lives. In some circumstances gender is irrelevant.

The OP wants to invoke so-called “natural law” to prove that all women ought to be relegated to a very short list of career opportunities, and that above all else women rightfully ought to be subservient to men. That’s only an appologetic to rationalize a repressive social order. It’s like how the folks at the top of society used to invoke the Devine Right of Kings to demonstrate that the King and his cronies were designated to rule over the peasants and their economic resources by the will of God: “Don’t complain to us about it. God says we’re on top. We can’t disobey God!”

Parents leaving their children is a problem of its own sort. It has nothing to do with whether women should have the opportunity to pursue fulfilling careers. It’s the same for men. Neither men nor women should be institutionally forbidden from jobs wherein their gonads won’t even be called upon.

reply

I don't think gender is irrelevant when it comes to parenting, actually. I think you are overinterpreting the original post and the point made by many of us. This is not about women being subservient to men, or only being able to access a few career opportunities, or about being institutionally forbidden from various jobs. It's about film and tv pushing a certain view of society that is clearly political and ideological in a way that has become so single-minded that it no longer tells the truth.

Did you see the docudrama Mars? That mission was also led by a woman. Virtually all the leaders were women. In "Away" the commander of the mission is a woman and the leader of the NASA ground group is also a woman. Men are relegated to minor or support roles. Look, I'm a woman and I love to see women get meaty roles. But these roles aren't meaty, they are trite and samey. They are just trite in a different way than the old-fashioned 1980s "heroic man looking off into the distance as he ponders his God-given leadership role"* trite.

The Americans was a show that, despite its extreme premise, explored, in an interesting and authentic way (authentic in terms of the characters' outlooks), the issue of women who are totally focused on their mission, and what that costs them and the people in their lives. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is doing it. From way back, Relic Hunter did it (in a funnier and more light-hearted way, and no one really got it except me, apparently, because they expected standard feminism and didn't notice that the show was cheekily questioning feminism). In all these cases, the show has a female leader, and the male characters are supporting characters, but those shows are telling the truth. Away is not doing it, at least not that I can see. Mars didn't do it. Another Life didn't do it. IMHO, these shows are avoiding telling the truth.

*I know I need a better name for this trope.

He's hardly a mindless stay-at-home husband. He's a scientist and astronaut who ultimately saves the day. Maybe you should actually watch a show before writing a comment criticizing its gender distribution and roles.
