It had potential...

But failed miserably...
It's a high budget straight to DVD pointless nonsense...

reply

Chastain deserves better, movies like these are beneath her.

reply

True that..

She literally produced it.

I haven't seen it yet, but it definitely looked exactly like a straight-to-DVD film that just happened to feature well-known stars.

Really, it looked a lot like a cheap knockoff of 2019's Anna, a film that I actually ended up liking a lot more than I expected. That's an underrated movie. Ava (even the title is almost the same) looks almost like the same movie, but without the charm and with a much less talented action choreographer.

reply

True that.. Anna was a good movie and this movie does indeed feel like a cheap knockoff of Anna

reply

Well, I guess we'll see how that 355 movie she's doing will turn out next year. *internet search for refresher* Oh no, Simon Kinberg's the director? And it's written by the same screenwriter of Catwoman? Dammit!

reply

This movie has to be so awful that not even the star of it is doing any promotion.

reply

and a major waste of talent, though there were some good scenes

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I was not impressed with the trailer at all, but nevertheless I decided to grab the film from Redbox last night and give it a look.

Having now seen it, I actually thought it was surprisingly not bad. It was at least better than the trailer made it look.

It appeared to me to be an extremely generic spy thriller with some A-list names, but I thought the film had a little more character than that. I'm not totally sure that I buy Chastain as an action heroine, but I'd still say she does well with the role. Malkovich and Colin Farrell are also well-suited to their roles.

I also thought the film looked pretty good, the plot didn't feel like completely rote claptrap, and the action scenes were serviceable. (The fight between Farrell and Malkovich was surprisingly good and was executed in a way that actually made Malkovich out to be formidable, despite his age.)

I guess it says something about my devotion to the action genre that even when I think a movie looks shitty I am still determined to rent it. But in this case I didn't regret the decision.

I'd give it a 6.5.

reply

It wasn't a total waste of time but it's not something I'm looking forward to watching again... I'd give it a 4.6

reply

It was awful. Pointless, meandering, flat characters, bad acting.
