Why Is There So Little Discussion Here?

This is a fascinating series, executed very well and creatively. I thought “pass” when I saw the promo trailers, because it didn’t seem that I was the target demographic for it at all; but my interest picked up before the premiere, when I saw where HBO had it scheduled, the Adult time slot for Sunday, their biggest night of the week. I watched, and got hooked. The show FEELS real. It’s not trite. It’s not facile. Adolescence is the hardest part of life I have experienced, and it clearly hasn’t gotten any easier. (Decrepitude may be as bad, or worse. I plan to avoid that!) The characters are fleshed-out and interesting. The narrative is complex and rife with opportunities. The production quality is quite good. Why the silence over here, do you think?

Not very likeable characters. Watching characters get raped and high on drugs is not a good time. And animal abuse.

I think you're supposed to be jerking off to this show - not talking about it.

The show is very effectively erotic, but has a narrative that goes FAR beyond the crude scenarios of adult entertainment movies, which have plots involving pizza deliveries, lascivious handymen and compliant housewives. Nate’s cunning entrapment of Jules surprised the heck out of me, because I didn’t think he was that complex or bright, and I didn’t realize that he knew about her tryst with his father, Dominant Daddy, though he had access to Cal’s home movies, which would explain that. It was excellent character development, showing me that Euphoria is much more than just a strokefest. Rue’s struggle with her addiction, Kat’s discovery and exploitation of her sexuality and Jules’ history of self-loathing are pretty deep character explorations as well, and so is Cal’s double-life persona in both halves of which we find the same Alpha Male, take-no-prisoners, weakness-is-for-weaklings neoNietzsche view of life. These stories all sound very plausible to me. I’ve known people like these, and I bet that you have, too. Sam Levinson has put some real elbow grease into Euphoria, and that’s why I want to talk about it. What I’d dismissed as a prima facie teen angstfest is anything but. And it’s also funny; for example, Rue’s lecture on how to and how not to pose a penis pic for texting and online posting. (I was disappointed that her views on the role of Photoshop, if any, in the process were omitted.) I’m glad I created a series recording for it. How do you feel about it?

Yea color me 2x surprised. I thought for sure there would be more discussion here and I am surprised I am still watching. I figured this would be just another show about teenage years being hard BS and it's nothing of the sort.

My one complaint is that the music drowns out the dialog. I was fascinated to learn of Jewels story but I had to turn on CC to get the words. Too damn much ohhh ahhhing going on. Otherwise fantastic!

It’s good to meet a kindred spirit, Frank. I think it’s very possible Euphoria is attracting a lesser audience than what it deserves. You and I both had dubious expectations, but took a chance and are drawn in. Others? I guess there are youngsters who are enjoying it as soft porn, as I did in my 10th grade book report on Brave New World, but I know more now. I hope this finds its audience. We all share a world with all kinds of people. I feel that Euphoria gives me more visceral understanding of, and simpatico with, the teens I pass on the street every day. And also of and with their families. That’s valuable.

I dont feel this series is soft porn at all. Maybe Jules with Nates father, but I saw that as her experience and lack of esteem,, and of his control issues, rather than porn.
The series was picked up for a second season.I am hoping more will watch. It might have one or two unnecessary characters that eat up some screen time though. I feel each story needs to be told a bit longer in each episode, hence my feeling that theres one too many stories going on.

I think you’re right about having too many narratives going on, but at least they’re all good narratives. Watching is like eating a really good sandwich that’s overstuffed. It’s work to try to keep an eye on everything and not let it slip out! I’m glad you are enjoying the show and have found our discussion!

Yes I am glad I found this thread too.. Next week is the finale already. I asked this in another thread but it seems Rue is way more into Jules, than the other way around. Not sure if its because shes still exploring her sexuality, or not wanting to commit, but Rue does an excellent job of exhibiting depression, and anxiety. I didnt like the whole strobe light effects, and wasnt sure what was being imagined or real. (like when Rue had the holster and acting like a detective, I know that was fantasy, but it was distracting to the actual storyline.
Lets see how the finale goes!
