why the fuck did this film not win any awards at the academy awards?

it wasn't even nominated for any awards at the oscars? wtf? did the director and producer just not put it up for consideration for any of the awards this year?

reply

What awards did you expect it to win? Best actor/actress? Acting was average... Best director? Direction was average. Best picture? Hardly. Best screenplay? Hardly. Best cinematography? Meh. Best musical score? Pfft...

Tell me which award you wanted it to win.

reply

you're wrong. the performance from florence pugh was unbelievably powerful, ethereal, spellbinding, realistic, and absorbing, and believable. i mean this is natural acting at it's finest. all the other performances were good and solid also. no average performances. i don't know what movie you watched but it certainly wasn't this film. again, you're wrong. the directing was amazingly and epically great. he directed this film so amazingly well that it's amazing it's only his second film. he showed nuance, technical merit, visionary detailed photography, absorbing feel direction in terms of the wide open, expansive look and feel making it claustrophobic and unnerving. also very artistic and vivid images and great picture framing. best picture.

i can't remember the last film i saw before i watched it that was as impressive as this film. i might have to go back 10 years to find a film as great as this film. best screenplay, yes. very emotionally involving film with witty dialogue, relatable and likable characters, and deep sociological implications, this is a very telling and meaningful family dynamics, importance film. best cinematography. without a doubt this film should have won this award. i can't remember the last film i watched before i watched this film that looks as impressive in an artistic and visually stimulating way as this film. best musical score? yes. very taut, creepy, breathtaking intensity music and sounds create mood/tone and atmosphere that really puts you there in the action like no other film that has ever been made.

reply

I'm wrong? Considering it wasn't even nominated for anything looks like I'm not wrong...

Witty dialogue? Where? From who?
Likeable characters? Which one? The generic ensamble of cliche college kids? Who in their right minds would go to some backwoods community of nutcases for a week like that? Then stay after people start jumping off cliffs? Unrealistic premise right there.

You say, that yes, it had best cinematography, where? Why? Because it had open fields of green grass?

reply

just because it wasn't nominated for any award doesn't mean you are not wrong. there must be a reason, maybe the director or producer didn't put it up for consideration for any awards.

reply

And just because YOU liked it doesn't mean I'm wrong. We all have our opinions. Looks like the academy and I have the same.

reply

the thing is you're wrong. anyone who knows anything about films knows this film is one of the best films ever made. look on any critic's website and you'll see the best reviews ever for this film. rotten tomatoes had it at 90% a few weeks after it came out.

reply

I agree with Luke. If you can't appreciate Midsommar, it only means you're a mental midget. There's really nothing more to say.

reply

ARE YOU LUKE'S SOCK,OR JUST TRYING TO GET IN HIS PANTS?

reply

yeah, but try to tell costumer that. the member right below this message. that's another problem nowadays they take rotten tomatoes like it's the end all, be all, has to be fresh or i won't watch it evil empire. i was upset when i bought midsommar and it has the retarded certified fresh from rotten tomatoes seal on the front cover. that was sickening to me.

it's not a gospel factual thing as far as a movie being good if it's fresh and bad if it's not fresh on that website. there's nothing more irritating than how in previews to movies they say certified fresh by rotten tomatoes. critics can be wrong and often are.

reply

I just saw this message. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I think rotten tomatoes is the be all and end all. You referenced rotten tomatoes and said it was rated at 90%. I just went to look and saw different numbers.

And just to be clear, in the past ten years of so I think I've gone to rotten tomatoes perhaps three times.

I pay little attention to critics of any kind when deciding to see a film unless I know the critic's tastes well; which means no professional critics or people who post online. I will consider friends and relatives opinions since I know their tastes.

reply

i said this because you slammed this film based on its' numbers on rotten tomatoes.

reply

I slammed nothing! I have never seen the film. The only thing I commented on was that it was not 90%, that is all. I checked only because I was curious.

Quoting numbers from review sights is not slamming or praising a film. It is conveying what others think. That can be a matter of interest, though I will only see films I think I would like to see and if critics and/or other fans rate it at 100% or 0% has no bearing at all on my decision.

reply

you said: Just for information: Currently on Rotten Tomatoes it says it "No critics Consensus" and the Audience Rating is 49%. so you were saying you believe in rotten tomatoes ratings and thus you were slamming it.

the mentioning of the numbers is saying rotten tomatoes has validity in their ratings. so you were saying this film isn't that good based on the ratings on rt.

reply

You are welcome to your interpretation even if it is 100% WRONG.

You quoted a 90% rating, so you are saying rotten tomatoes has validity. If you assertion is good for me its good for you.

I repeat, I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS FILM!!!! I do not seek out ratings sites to make determinations of films.

I will admit I have occasionally voted on IMDB, but whatever the IMDB score is I don't acknowledge any validity to it on a film's quality or lack of it.

You can continue ranting about your interpretation of my simple remark regarding your assertion of RT ratings and what I saw when I looked, purely out of curiosity, on the day I read your post. However, your bizarre opinion is your problem, it is not mine.

I am done with this conversation. There is really no point to it any longer.

reply

fuck you

it's not wrong, you brought up the numbers on rotten tomatoes after i said how great it is which means you were saying something to the contrary of what i said.

not true, as the only rating that matters on that site(not saying it's the end all be all movie rating site because it isn't) is the final, right after the movie is released to theaters rating which was at 99%. if it's at lower now it's not a valid rating.

i hate rotten tomatoes. i hate how this is somehow the definitive is a movie good or not source. i don't trust it because they put martyrs('08)a masterpiece at like 45%.

fuck you

reply

you don't know anything about film otherwise you'd instantly recognize the artistic merits of this film are beyond most other film's artistic merits.

Considering the only movies nominated for best cinematography this year that were actually visually memorable were The Lighthouse and 1917. The Irishman got nominated? Yeah, because shakycam and ugly grey skies are so remarkable!

I was hoping Midsommar could get nominated in cinematography and art design. Every shot in this movie is striking, thought provoking, and visually creative. You could use practically any still frame from this movie as a framed picture in your home. The first slow shot where that triangle building is revealed to us gave me goosebumps; the speed of the panning and the framing tells us everything we need to know about that building without saying a single word. They could’ve just pointed the camera and taken a bland shot of the building, but instead the cinematography conveys exactly what the audience is supposed to know. THAT is genius.

The best cinematography category has always been one of the weaker and most questionable nominations. I feel like the movies that get nom’d are chosen by dartboard most year. Oh well, at least The Lighthouse, a movie with actually amazing cinematography, got recognized.

finally finally, some one on here with some sense. it is simply one of the best films ever made. i've never been more impressed with a film ever. i mean that's how great it is as art film. this is film existing on the highest level that a film can exist at. every single shot in this film is masterful and poetic and beautiful and moving and breathtaking and powerful. i've never experienced as great of a film experience as an adult. even the lord of the rings films pale in comparison to the awe of this film. i've also never experienced as visionary of a film as this film. as soon as they get to the cult place in Sweden every single scene is moving, and powerful in an incredibly visceral way.

that gradually going upside down sequence of the car they were in going to the cult place was one of the most innovative and original sequences that i have ever experienced in a film. it was so moving, it gave me goosebumps. i've never seen a sequence that goes upside down in anything before or since. the dark, ominous music in that scene makes it all the more effective in an eerie, disturbing, and creepy way as well as making it more powerful and moving. something ominous is about to happen is what that scene tells you.

how come this film didn't get any nominations at the oscars this year? and how come this website is retarded. everyone saying this film is not that good at all and they putting it at just 7.2??? this film should be at at the lowest 9.0.

reply

A horror movie where everyone gets murdered in some fantasy setting isn't going to get an Oscar, I mean come on.

reply

Dani doesn't get murdered.

reply

I don't care.

reply

No one asked you to care.

reply

Sure you did.

The film is still a horror movie and it doesn't matter if one character lived.

reply

Get out won an Oscar. Horror movies can win.

reply

Because the movie poster is annoying as shit.

reply

You're right. Terrible poster.

reply

I'm afraid you would have to ask The Academy about that. I have no clue why some movies win and others don't.

reply

this film got like 90% on rotten tomatoes. if we can agree on anything and know anything it's that critics know if a movie is good or bad. anyone who has any knowledge of a film's merits knows this film is unlike any other film and is an exceptional masterpiece that will be watched years from now with amazement of it's technical, artistic, and craftsman brilliance and genius. it will endure as a classic of all time.

reply

you're all over it luke. it's great to see someone out here that appreciated the film as much as i did. yes, Midsommar is one of the best movies in the last 20 years!

reply

thank you, thank you, finally someone on here with sense. it's at a higher level of quality than 90% of films that are being made nowadays. it's not gimmicky, it's not cliche, it's not one note, it's not like any other film. it succeeds on the highest level of film. it's an experience film, which is sadly not around anymore. it's a deep human and life film. the only film i can think of right now which has a feel quality to it is the company of wolves. have you ever watched it?

reply

midsommar is definitely on another level. i knew it from the moment i saw the trailer. i hadn't been to the theater in over 5 years, and i saw it twice before the summer was over! what a film! wow! ari aster knocked it outta the park, no doubt! i can't wait to see what he does next!
no, i haven't seen company of wolves. i will definitely check it out soon, thanks Luke!

reply

maybe we could be the next siskel and ebert? we could sit down every sunday afternoon and watch clips of movies in movie theaters, then turn to the camera, and talk about the movies, and give thumbs up or thumbs down. lol.

when i first heard about midsommar it was from a girl who i was going to go on a date with to a movie theater. she brought it up and sent me a pic of the movie. now i had no idea how good it was going to be, but it seemed like it might be different than most horror movies from her saying "i don't usually go to horror movies but this one is getting good reviews."

i don't go to new movies because of rotten tomatoes scores. i go just based on what the movie looks like in a trailer.

so we ended up not going to that movie which after watching it i'm glad we didn't because the date didn't work out, i'm never going to see her again and if i had experienced this once in a lifetime, life changing film with her i would always have this sad and bad memory of this special to me film.

so a few weeks after our date i was going back and forth in deciding if i should go watch it. i was debating with myself about is it good enough to watch in a theater or not? and after being on fandango and viewing a close up still from the film of that birth defected white haired guy who came from an incestuous affair i was thinking it might be too disturbing to watch.

after that i decided to go. i'm sure glad i did. oh my gosh! there are like 10 times in my whole life where a going to a movie theater and watching a movie experience and that movie was so epically great that it is one of the most special memories of my life and where it leaves an indelible mark on my life and my memory and this was one of them. you know what i'm talking about?

reply

horror movies tend to get overlooked at Oscars... Not clean cut enough for an industry PR event...

reply

I guess it was too disturbing to be nominated for Oscars. Mostly they choose politically correct and soft movies. Midsommer isn't and I agree with you it's a masterpiece in horror genre. Another movie to mention is "Nightingale" that is extremely disturbing, but powerful at the same time. Unfortunately Oscars do not nominate the best movies. There is an agenda behind what to nominate and what not.

reply

Because horrors, even the high-brow, tend to be overlooked at the Oscars, duh

reply

fuck you

reply

I didn't say I like it, I don't, was just stating a fact, don't be a child, or have you forgotten imdb?

reply

you insulted me by saying duh.
