The Wicker Man

This sounds similar.

Meets Jonestown with elements from The Lottery.

reply

Yeah, rip-off.

reply

I just saw it. It’s a mix of the Wickermen and lottery.

reply

Somewhat, but there are lots of differences.

reply

It's a lot better than the 2006 version of the The Wicker Man.

reply

Yes.

reply

It was unintentionally funny, which is death for a movie like this. Totally takes you out of the movie.

I never saw the original. It has a much higher imdb score.

reply

The original is funny, but in a much different way. Love the original.

reply

Watching the original wicker man again the other day, and knowing the "twist" does make it very funny indeed. Like when the girl fell out of the closet, i was in stitches!!! lmao!

reply

I actually knew about the twist before I saw it. The movie was really enjoyable any way. And yes, there is some humor involved.

"They're naked."

"Of course. It's much too dangerous to jump through fire with clothes on."

reply

I can't say whether it was intentionally or unintentionally funny but over the years I have noticed this. Many horror movies provoke laughter at some point. It seems to relieve the tension that builds up during the creepy, scary parts.

reply

The similarity to Wicker is what is drawing me to this movie. I've heard that it has some great photography too.

reply

Yes, there are many glaring similarities, so many that you could say it is just a modern day remake of The Wicker Man with the Christian elements removed.

-Isolated culture with pagan practices and teachings
-Deceiving and manipulating outsiders
-Death by sacrificial fire while town folk watch and sing
-Open and group sexuality
-Summer solstice in place of May Day

I thought it was enjoyable for what it is, but certainly could have been shortened a bit.
