My thoughts

Andrew Garfield is terrific in a dynamic, energetic, career best performance. He elevates the film and makes it seem better than it is. The songs are hit and miss. Many of them aren't very memorable or all that good, but there was a couple strong ones. Screenplay is alright, but could have been better. The frequent mentions that the character's turning 30 soon was a little excessive and started to wear thin. The film feels overlong at times and pacing was a little off. There are some great moments, but the film doesn't always work. Still worth seeing, mostly for Garfield's performance. 7/10.

Not the worst musical this year. 5 with five thoughts:

1. Getting real tired of the Netflix look. Why is it not possible to color grade a movie in something other than a greenish/yellow tint?

2. Songs are a bizarre layering of Lin Manuel Miranda's style over Rent's.

3. Static characterization. As you say, "I'm turning 30 soon" doesn't provide enough compelling drama.

4. It's kind of weird to romanticize the making of a musical in musical form. Yet it's been done before and done better. As a movie, musical, biography, or any other storytelling endeavor, it's perfectly passable without adding much of note to the original work.

5. The official catalog label of this movie in the Victorville Film Archive is T52M8842, just in case anyone's looking for that info.

What do the characters in the label ID mean?

T is the first letter of the film's title - Tick, Tick... Boom!
5 is the number of bags of popcorn you rated the film
2 represents the decade that the film was released in
M is the first letter of the directors last name (Miranda)
88 is the shelf number that the tape is located on
42 is the tape number which denotes where on shelf 88 the tape is located

5 bags of popcorn and a little bomb keychain as a reference to the movie title

Despite its flaws I think it's worth spending the HEI Points to see it.

i liked it a bit less than you, i guess. i gave it a 2/5 only, though maaaayyybe that's a bit harsh of me.

but it's a musical, and i didn't really enjoy any of the songs. certainly none of them stuck in my head, and there was nothing that made me go 'ah, i'd like to hear that again.' except perhaps that one tune near the beginning that was just voice and percussion - took place in the apartment, at a party, i believe.

if you make a musical and almost none of the songs are memorable, i think you'd have to call that a failure.

garfield's good, but he's always good. that's a given.

What other musicals have you seen this year and what did you think of them?

reply

oh jeez...as in 2021 releases? hmmph...

is annette a musical? i guess it must be. i thought that was good, though overlong. but i think everything's overlong...nothing new there.

i think those might be the only two i've seen. are there any you'd recommend?

reply

I would recommend In the Heights and Dear Evan Hansen. I would consider Annette a musical and I really loved it. Everybody's Talking About Jamie is pretty good too.

i've heard enough conflicting things about evan hansen to make me interested in it. i think into the heights is on disney plus, so i might check it out there.

i don't think i'm going to renew d+ tbh...it just doesn't have that much i'm interested in, and surprisingly i'm not even into the marvel shows. i'll probably pick up crave or arrow or both, depending on the price.

reply

I checked and In the Heights is currently on Crave, if you end up subscribing to it.

Oscar worthy performance?

reply

Yes, I think Garfield deserves a nomination.
