Now that the season is over, is it worth watching?

I waited until all episodes aired.

reply

Apparently the SEASON isn't OVER with and we're only HALF WAY through it at some kind of a MID-SEASON point.

Whether or not it's worth watching or not is also a question that's debatable, and it probably also depends upon your OWN point of view about how you yourself feel about it after watching it.

If you've ever seen MULHOLLAND DRIVE by DAVID LYNCH -- where a character named BETTY MORPHS into being another different one named DIANE by the end of that story -- then you'll also understand how this story is also something like that one -- which is also why you have to decide for yourself whether or not watching it is your "CUP of TEA" or not (so to speak).

Because certain people like drinking a certain kinds of TEA's, or prefer watching different kinds of stories, and others do not.

reply

If you're a fan of anything Joss Whedon has done(Buffy/Angel, Dollhouse, Firefly, Agents of Shield) then it's 100% worth watching.

If not, you might just think it's okay.

reply

I'm a FAN of "ANGEL and FIREFLY," but that doesn't also mean my opinion falls into the 100% CATEGORY of this show being LIKE those other 2 shows (which one would consider to be 100% worth watching).

Because this one was also NOT told to us like those other 2 shows were (which were also much less confusing and much easier to comprehend than this one has been).

At first I was also a fan of "The 4400" (which another poster pointed out has the same BASIC PLOT as this story does).

But as that 4400 story progressed, it also got WORSE, and to the point where one had no desire to WATCH it over and over again the same way as one did ANGEL, or the "OBJECTS in SPACE" episode of FIREFLY (an episode which, imo, was also a MASTERPIECE of STORYTELLING).

reply

The writing and characters are definitely Whedonesque. I watched the first episode randomly and mid-way through, I opened my laptop to see if he was attached in anyway since it seemed like his style.

I'm not saying a Whedon fan is guaranteed to like it, but chances are if you like his work you won't be disappointed.

Have you seen EPISODE 6 yet???

The FIRST HALF of it is INCOMPREHENSIBLE to the point where you don't RECOGNIZE anyone, and you also aren't even able to understand where they are or what they're talking about (due to the way lots of the language that they use is also something that you've NEVER even HEARD used before).

Also NOTE the way NO ONE ELSE (but myself) who's been watching the show and posting messages here has shown up to discuss it.

And that may also be because they turned it off and DIDN'T WATCH it thinking there had been a MISTAKE and HBO had aired the WRONG SHOW at the WRONG TIME!!!

So the way too HASTY conclusion that "if you like other the shows you'll also like this one" may also be a BIT PREMATURE, and be the kind of a conclusion that you shouldn't arrive at yet.

Because by Ep. 6 the story telling is so UNEVEN (or NON LINEAR) that it WANDERS around all over the place leaving one pretty much COMPLETELY CLUELESS about WTF is going on during the FIRST HALF of it.

And that's probably also NOT a good thing to have done to an audience.

reply

I mean, the episode still had an intro, so i'm not sure why anyone would think they were watching the wrong show. The setting was different and definitely odd at first, but soon enough, it was easy enough to get what they were going for.

If you had trouble, I guess just watch it again. Westworld does this far worse( i had to re-watch the whole damned 1st season to understand WTF was happening) and it's still one of the best shows on TV.

reply

I did watch it again, and even though I understood what was going on in the FIRST HALF of it while watching it again, NOTHING they were saying made any SENSE (due to the way one had NEVER HEARD of the things before that they were saying to each other).

But a BRAND NEW TOPIC (which contains a REVIEW of EP. 6) has also been posted here which also EXPLAINS what they were saying and what it means.

https://moviechat.org/tt8697870/The-Nevers/60a40029d74e180bfd73bf33/EPISODE-6-a-REVIEW

So reading that REVIEW has also been VERY HELPFUL in being able to understand WTF they were talking about.

It's not over, we are only halfway into the season.

However, the second half likely won't air until 2022.

reply

So for all intents it could be considered the first season.

reply

Yes, that's the way that it should be seen whenever you have to wait a YEAR to see the next episode of it.

But for some reason certain shows (like VIKINGS) also prefer to confuse people by claiming that 2 SEASONS that are aired a YEAR or more apart are ONE SEASON.

reply

One reason I can see for doing this is what happened with Nickelodeon's Victorious. The show was cancelled halfway through the third season which had already finished filming. The producers split the season and called the remaining episodes Season 4. The cast and crew sued since they had only been contracted for three seasons. It was settled before it went to court. Always wonder who made out on that deal?

reply

Thanks for the explanation. So apparently this situation also causes confusion for both the viewer and the actors as well???

Since a SEASON is usually something that last for about 3 MONTHS (Winter/SPRING/Summer/Fall), waiting for 4 or MORE SEASONS to see the 2ND HALF of the SEASON of a show also seems pretty SILLY and, imo, still MAKES NO SENSE at all.

reply

I donโ€™t claim itโ€™s an explanation. Iโ€™m guessing if it might apply to this series.

reply

My guess is the actors were PAID for doing a 4TH SEASON (even when they hadn't been given CONTRACTS to do one).

Because it also MAKES NO SENSE that you'd be hired to do 3 SEASONS and then NOT get paid for doing a 4th season.

Since HBO rarely makes a show with 4 SEASONS anymore, my guess is that probably also won't ever be an ISSUE for this show.

reply

Yep, sometimes a contract will contain an escalation clause which increases the payment to a person each season. So if they can shoot enough episode that they can effectively cover 2 years in one shooting they can also keep the costs down by claiming it is only 1 season. If they said this was season 1 and the next half was season 2 they would likely have had to pay some of the cast and crew more for the next episodes.

reply

The kind of SLEAZY situations people come up with in order to try to save a buck or two never ceases to amaze me!!!

This probably also explains what they were doing in "VIKINGS" (which was also filmed in IRELAND where they also say it's cheaper to film shows).

So if they're already trying to make a buck that way, the ESCALATION CLAUSE would also explain the reason why they kept making seasons that were SPLIT UP into separate parts, where you didn't see the NEXT PART of it until 12 to 18 MONTHS later.

HBO SHOWS also use to have 13 EPISODES in a season (like with SIX FEET UNDER). But gradually the new shows have also had fewer and fewer episodes to where THE NEVERS now has LESS than HALF as many as they had before.

Because I still don't consider the next 6 episodes to be a part of S1.

Since they won't AIR for another YEAR or more, imo, that will also be S2 (not S1).

Well, not in terms of the story, the story is very incomplete.

I mean, the OP is asking is this is worth watching, but frankly, I don't know yet.

reply

A STORY should be based upon a TIME FRAME of some sort (sort of like having CHAPTERS in a book).

So what they should do is call the EPISODES "CHAPTERS," and call THE SEASONS "PART 1, 2, 3, 4 ETC."

Therefore any part that has a BREAK of a YEAR or more would also NOT be the same part.

And when the show airs again in 2022, that would also be PART 2 of the story.

Only Part 1 ended, the season actually consist of 12 episodes. By the way yes its an awesome show.

reply

I gave up. I probably lasted 3 episodes and it was just not worth my time. Now others are saying it is like Buffy, Angel and Firefox... I watched all three of those series but this one wasn't close enough to keep me watching.

reply

Haven't seen Buffy, but I don't think it's that much like "Angel or Firefly" (not Firefox).

Maladie could be seen as being like RIVER (due to the way both River and MALADIE had evil doctors doing things to them that shouldn't have been done that made them crazy). But other than that we also don't have a MOTELY CREW flying around in SPACE inside of a SPACE SHIP.

And we also don't have VAMPIRES (and lots of other non human SPECIES), or travel to other dimensions like they did in "ANGEL." But since it's only the first 6 episodes of 12 more to come, who knows what might happen later on???
