If his character had been a poorly-informed Jew or Muslim, do you think they would've goofed on his religious faith as much?

No. Also Tim Heidecker who is a self-proclaimed democratic socalist is one of the writers and producers also and HATES christanity.
shareApparently, Heidecker identifies as an atheist/agnostic. But weirdly, I came across this interview (about his film "The Comedy") where he seems to suggest that not having a connection to religion has made people less caring.

shareI can't read his mind, but it seems odd to say that religion helps connect people in a positive way and then portray a character who's considered an idiot by everyone because he's religious.
As far as my initial point, I doubt that if the character was an Orthodox Jew he would've been played as a buffoon. Just seems like Christian characters are lampooned in a way that never happens with other faiths.
