so - accepting the pilot scene was a plot device to remove Blake, and also to underline the humanity aspect of the film...

what on earth were S+B going to do with a captured German pilot given their task was still pre-eminent?

(yes I appreciate the plot doesnt deal with that, but it was the first thing that struck mne once it was clesar they were going to pull him out of the burning plane).

reply

They probably didn't think that far ahead. They saw a helpless man suffering, about to burn to death, and their humanity kicked in.

reply

yep. i can get that absolutely. I just left a messy get out then! :)

reply

It was just a straight up plot device to kill Blake, nothing about that scene was logical or reasonable. It was quite lame actually.

reply

all a bit odd really. they could have had blake dieing after the explosion in the dugout/dormiitory for example. i can only assume it was tied up with displaying humanity etc - but left a messy "get out"

reply

They should have rescued him, pointed their guns at him and said "you have 2 minutes to get as far away from here as you can, in a specific direction. If you don't go, or come back, we will shoot you).

reply

excellent!

if only somebody else had used the same idea in another film, ever,.... ;-) LOL

good call bistritapcv :D

being far too boring and sensible, I guess the pilot with burned legs etc may not have been able to get away ...
